UDLUniversal Design for Learning

“Teachers want their students to succeed, but a one-size-fits-all approach to education simply does not work.” (Cast, 2009) :

“Teachers want their students to succeed, but a one-size-fits-all approach to education simply does not work.” (Cast, 2009) Teachers face many different challenges in their classrooms every single day. -Sensory, physical and learning disabilities -Behavior and emotional problems -English language barriers -Lack of interest in school How do we reach all of these students successfully?

What is UDL? :

What is UDL? Universal Design for Learning is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone--not a single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs.

What will a UDL classroom look like? :

What will a UDL classroom look like? 1. Information presented in a variety of ways 2. Alternate assessments to demonstrate learning 3.Goal setting specified to each learner 4. Student led classrooms; teacher as facilitator

UDL and our school :

UDL and our school UDL will allow us, as teachers, to create differentiated classrooms that will reach each and every one of our students. Lessons will be designed specifically to our students which will in turn keep them motivated and interested in school.

Principle # 1Provide Multiple Means of Representation :

Principle # 1Provide Multiple Means of Representation 1. Provide options for perception Examples in the classroom: (1) providing the same information through different sensory modalities (e.g., through vision, hearing, or touch); (2) providing information in a format that will allow for adjustments by the user (e.g., text that can be enlarged, sounds that can be amplified).* 2. Provide options for language and symbols Examples in the classroom: Using and implementing tools such as graphs, vocabulary, images and pictures. An important instructional strategy is to ensure that alternative representations are provided, not only for accessibility but for clarity and comprehensibility to all students.* 3. Provide options for comprehension Examples in the classroom: Using selective attending, integrating new information with prior knowledge, strategic categorization, and active memorization.* (* Cast, 2010)

Principle # 2Provide multiple means of action and expression :

Principle # 2Provide multiple means of action and expression 1. Provide options for physical action Examples: Using interactive educational software or assistive technologies such as voice activated switches and expanded keyboards 2. Provide options for expressive skills and fluency Example: Allow students to express stories through various ways of storytelling instead of just through writing. 3. Provide options for executive functions Examples: Students will learn to set long-term goals, plan effective strategies for reaching those goals, monitor their progress, and modify strategies as needed. * (*Cast, 2010)

Principle # 3Provide Multiple Means of Engagement :

Principle # 3Provide Multiple Means of Engagement 1. Provide options for recruiting interest 2. Provide options for sustaining effort and persistence 3. Provide options for self-regulation Examples: Creating student learning centers that meet the individual needs of each student.

UDL and its principles. . . :

UDL and its principles. . . The 3 principles of UDL were created to provide students with a wider variety of options. There are 3 primary brain networks in which these principles are based. 1. Recognition 2. Strategic 3. Affective

Brain Research and UDL :

Brain Research and UDL We have learned through brain research that all children learn differently. Recognition Strategic Affective Networks Networks Networks (The “what” of learning) The “how” of learning The “why” of learning How we gather facts and Planning and performing How learners get engaged categorize what we see, performing tasks. How we and stay motivated. How hear, and read. Identifying organize and express our they are challenged, letters, words, or an author's ideas. Writing an essay or excited, or interested. style are recognition tasks. solving a math problem. (*Cast, 2010)

Students and their differences :

Students and their differences Students are different in many different ways. They learn differently, process in different ways, come from different backgrounds and cultures, are ethnically different, and much more. The three principles of UDL are designed to meet the needs of these differences and if teachers follow the principles they will be successful at reaching each of their individual students.

CAST CAST is an educational research & development organization that works to expand learning opportunities for all individuals through Universal Design for Learning. (Cast, 2010) :

CAST CAST is an educational research & development organization that works to expand learning opportunities for all individuals through Universal Design for Learning. (Cast, 2010) Cast online tools: UDL book builder- This is a free online tool for educators to build digital stories. This will support reading instruction in our classrooms and give our students an alternative to just reading from text. UDL lesson builder- This is a free online tool that will allow educators to build lesson plans based on standards and will help them to customize the lesson to meet the needs of each individual learner. WiggleWorks- This is another free program that gives educators access to interactive books. This too will allow us to meet the diverse needs of learners in our reading instruction.
