Agenda :

Agenda Background Target Audience / Duration / Assumption Learning / performance objectives Content Outline Current Challenges Future Challenges Conclusion

Slide 3:

Background MOE Third Masterplan (MP3) for ICT in education “Students will be required to use ICT to look for information, synthesise reports, give feedback on each others’ work and collaborate with peers within and outside school.” School teachers should have a better understanding of collaborative learning theory.

Slide 4:

Target Audience Target Audience is P5 and P6 teachers Assumption is Learners have access to Blackboard (BB) system. There is a MID817 module inside BB. Duration is 8hr 15min

Slide 5:

Learning objectives By the end of the elearning journey, teachers will be able to : Define collaborative learning. Describe 2 differences between collaborative learning and cooperative learning. Design 1 simple P5 or P6 lesson plan (30-60min) (any subject) that promotes collaboration among students.

Slide 6:

Course Outline My elearning package was developed based on the 5Es Learning Cycle Model. Had created an elearning website http://sites.google.com/site/elearningjyps/ to host the learning contents, which include text, audio and video clips. Therefore, while going through this elearning package, user has to follow the sequence stage1, stage2, … stage5.

Slide 7:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Engage (stage1) Explore (stage2) Explain (stage3) Elaborate (stage4) Evaluate (stage5)

Slide 8:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage1 : Engage Process : Generate interest and curiosity Learners to assess current knowledge

Slide 9:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage1 : Engage Activities : Learners watch a video on collaborative learning Learners will participate in phase1 AOD. Topic is “What do you know about collaborative learning at this stage in phase1” Instructional strategy : Discovery method

Slide 10:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage2 : Explore Process : Provides students with hands-on experiences

Slide 11:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage2 : Explore Activites : Learners will create Google accounts so that they can explore the various collaborative tools on the Google Apps, eg, Google Gmail, Google Talk, Google Calendar, Google Doc. Learners are required to do research on collaborative learning theory.

Slide 12:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage2 : Explore Instructional Strategy : Constructivist method Collaborative method

Slide 13:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage3 : Explain Process : Learners to explain concept in their own words. Learners to use previous experiences as a basis for explaining concept.

Slide 14:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage3 : Explain Activities : Learners participate in phase2 AOD, topic is “What do you know about collaborative learning now in phase2”. Learners to read and comment on at least one of their peers’ writing. Learners to pen down their experiences on the AOD forum on working on Google Apps, focusing on collaborative learning.

Slide 15:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage3 : Explain Instructional Strategy : Social Constructivist method

Slide 16:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage4 : Elaborate Process : Learners to apply concepts to new situations, real-life application. Learners to be aware of alternatives.

Slide 17:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage4 : Elaborate Activities : Learners do research on cooperative learning theory. Learners compare collaborative and cooperative learning theories. Learners list 2 differences on the AOD forum.

Slide 18:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage4 : Elaborate Activities : Learners design and develop a simple P5 or P6 lesson plan (30-60min) (any subject) that promotes collaboration among the students. Learners upload their lesson plans onto the AOD Learners review at least one of their peers lesson plan on the AOD forum.

Slide 19:

Instructional Strategy : Discovery method Social Constructivist method 5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage4 : Elaborate

Slide 20:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage5 : Evaluate Process : Learners to assess their own learning.

Slide 21:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage5 : Evaluate Activities : Learners to improve their lesson plan based on their peers’ review and upload the revised version onto their own forums in the AOD.

Slide 22:

5Es Learning Cycle Model Stage5 : Evaluate Instructional Strategy : Cognitivism

Slide 23:

Legend BB : Blackboard system AOD : Asynchronous Online Discussion   Under Blackboard (BB), elearning module MID817, Discussion Board,  Phase1 AOD is a forum titled "What do you know about collaborative learning at this moment? (phase1)", meant for use in stage1. Phase2 AOD is a forum titled "What do you know about collaborative learning now? (phase2)", meant for use in stage2. There is a forum titled "My personal experience with Google Apps", meant for use in stage3. There is a forum titled "What are the differences between collaborative and cooperative learning?", meant for use in stage4. Each and every one of the student will have a forum of their own. They will be the facilitator of their own forum. Meant for use in stage4 and 5. Every student will have to upload their first draft of lesson plan as well as the revised lesson plan onto the BB in their own forum.

Slide 24:

Current Challenges Teacher refrain from “giving away” answer to students Asynchronous Online Discussion (AOD) participation rate is not satisfactory

Slide 25:

Future Challenges Improve the participation rate of Asynchronous Online Discussion (AOD) Include video-conferencing feature on the elearning website to facilitate students discussion online

Slide 26:

Conclusion The 5Es Learning model is a good model to use to design a elearning package. But still, the success of the whole package not only depends on the course designer, but also the whole-hearted participation of the learners.
