Responsive Writing: 

Responsive Writing Teaching the difference between summary and responsive writing

Goals: 

Goals To use quarters to teach students to connect with how they personally feel about specific issues by responding rather than summarizing/ regurgitating what was written about a certain issue or offering a plot summery of the piece.

Objectives: 

Objectives 1. Students will be able to develop an understanding of writing response which connects with their synthesis of learning materials. 2. Students will be able to write a paragraph which uses response-style writing and demonstrates that they can personally connect to a given subject.

Materials: 

Materials One roll of US Quarters Chalkboard Pens/Pencils Paper

Vocabulary: 

Vocabulary Response- The written demonstration of how one feels about a subject when the subject is connected to past information, feelings, and compared to what is known. Summary- The very surface explanation of something that is read. Normally it is the regurgitation of given facts or, in literature, the story line.

Procedures: 

Procedures Explain “Response Writing” Money rules 5 minute short paragraphs

Procedures: 

Procedures Pair-Share Call-to-Order Explain “Plot Summary” or “Summarization”

Procedures: 

Procedures Write “Response”on board and discuss How does this make me feel and why? Students write again- this time with Feeling! Pair-Share Identify any “feeling words” in response paragraph Share as a whole class
