Marketing Ploys via the Internet The Internet is a place where people can easily distort their true identity and take advantage of unsuspecting consumers. Internet users are becoming more wary of these marketing ploys and have begun to fight back.

Corporate Blogs: 

Corporate Blogs Corporate blogs allow consumers a place to vent, a way to feel connected to the company, and a keep them informed. However, the blogs can backfire if they are proven to be set up in any way. Wal-mart and Sony are examples of companies that utilized “fake” blogs in order to create more publicity.

Myspace, Xanga: 

Myspace, Xanga Two popular Internet sites, myspace.com and xanga.com have paid the price for violating the privacy of children and teenagers. Both sites failed to block adults from accessing information posted by adolescents One girl filed a lawsuit against myspace.com when a sexual predator found her through the site. The man was legally considered an adult and should not have been able to see her private information

AOL: 

AOL AOL caused an up rise when they posted Search log on the Internet This was considered an invasion of privacy because the searches could be “pieced together” to identify the person who made the search AOL users wanted their searches to be completely anonymous because the searches often dealt with personal issues or subjects AOL users were worried their searches would be used by advertising agencies
