Ferrell Fetal Health Center at Children ’ s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics provides a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art specialized services before, during and after delivery for mothers whose fetuses have been diagnosed with complex birth defects. This new program provides integrated obstetrical and tertiary pediatric outpatient and inpatient services uniquely developed to improve outcomes for infants with severe birth defects.Delivering High Risk Babies: Delivering High Risk Babies As of 2011, Children ’ s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics delivers high risk infants needing specialized care after delivery. Children Mercy has a 60 bed, level IIIc intensive care nursery, the highest in the region. Their collaborative plan of care begins before birth during an integrated consult where the intensive care nursery staff and surgeons meet with the parents to discuss possible treatments, interventions, and outcomes. The pediatric cardiologist is a part of the integrated consult with the parents before delivery and may be present for delivery to ensure optimal outcome and prompt interventions for the baby.Family Centered Care: Family Centered Care Mothers are able to stay in the same facility as their baby instead of being across town, eliminating the emotional strain on families of being in two different places. After delivery, the baby ’ s surgeons and practitioners are able to meet with the family in person, to discuss the baby ’ s plan of care.Family Centered Care: Family Centered Care Within hours after delivery, the fetal health nurses take the mother to the intensive care nursery to spend as much time as possible with her baby before any procedures or surgery. Siblings and family members are able to visit and provide support, making the delivery experience as remarkable as possible.Fetal Health Center Staff: Fetal Health Center Staff MFM or OB are in-house 24 hours, 7 days a week OB Anesthesia will be onsite prior to delivery and several hours post-delivery Mothers will be cared for by experienced Perinatal RNs Documentation between mom and baby is integrated through the use of streamlined charting using Cerner.
