TYPES OF ENERGY :

TYPES OF ENERGY Mechanical, Radiant, Chemical, Heat, Electrical and Nuclear

MR. CHEN* is a mnemonic for remembering the 6 forms of energy. : Mechanical – windmill used to make electricity, water wheel used to grind grain; Radiant – solar panel used to provide electricity and heat for a house; Chemical – gasoline is used to run a car, propane gas used to heat an oven; Heat – coal is used to heat a house or produce steam for a steam train engine;

MR. CHEN* is a mnemonic for remembering the 6 forms of energy. : Electrical – electricity from an outlet is used to run appliances in your home; Nuclear – nuclear power plant uses the fission (breaking apart) of atoms to create energy that is converted into electricity.

Forms of Energy :

Forms of Energy Energy is the ability to do work or make change It can cause motion or other changes in matter There are many forms of energy

What is Mechanical Energy? :

What is Mechanical Energy? Energy due to a object’s motion (kinetic) or position (potential). The bowling ball has mechanical energy. When the ball strikes the pins, mechanical energy is transferred to the pins!

Examples of Mechanical Energy :

Examples of Mechanical Energy

What is Radiant Energy :

What is Radiant Energy electromagnetic energy Includes energy from gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet rays (solar energy), visible light, infrared rays, microwave and radio bands

What is Chemical Energy? :

What is Chemical Energy? Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck.

Examples of Chemical Energy :

Examples of Chemical Energy

What is Heat Energy? :

What is Heat Energy? The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms are. A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement.

What is Electrical Energy? :

What is Electrical Energy? Energy caused by the movement of electrons Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy

Nuclear Energy :

Nuclear Energy Nuclear Energy is energy stored in the nucleus of an atom––the energy that holds the nucleus together. The energy can be released when the nuclei are combined or split apart. Nuclear energy creates electricity and powers ships.

The Law of conservation of Energy :

The Law of conservation of Energy The law of conservation of energy says that energy is neither created nor destroyed. When we use energy, it doesn’t disappear. We change it from one form of energy into another. A car engine burns gasoline, converting the chemical energy in gasoline into mechanical energy. Solar cells change radiant energy into electrical energy. Energy changes form, but the total amount of energy in the universe stays the same.

QUIZ TIME! :

QUIZ TIME! What type of energy cooks food in a microwave oven? RADIANT ENERGY What type of energy is the spinning plate inside of a microwave oven? MECHANICAL ENERGY

QUIZ TIME! :

QUIZ TIME! Electrical energy is transported to your house through power lines. When you plug an electric fan to a power outlet, electrical energy is transform into what type of energy? MECHANICAL ENERGY

QUIZ TIME! :

QUIZ TIME! What energy transformation occurs when an electric lamp is turned on? ELECTRICAL ENERGY  LIGHT ENERGY

Slide 22:

Draw a flow map showing the flow of energy transformations in a car from starting vehicle to driving. You should have 5 different types of energy.
