Kate Carew’s article in the New York Tribune on the spiritual and the mundane - following are several quotes from her article.

Kate Carew:

Kate Carew Journalist She accompanied the Master to the Bowery Mission She wrote about her time with Abdu’l-Bahá in New York City for the New York Tribune.

… Suddenly there was a stir, murmurs of "The Master!" :

… Suddenly there was a stir, murmurs of "The Master!"

Many stood up, a few rushed from the room, among them the Enthusiast. From an inner apartment came now a strange medley of sounds.

PowerPoint Presentation:

There was a chatter of high-pitched American voices; a beautifully modulated one, I learned afterward, was that of Dr. Fareed, the interpreter and friend.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Dominating all, by a peculiar, weird quality, was a nasal monotone unlike any sound I had ever heard. Reported by Kate Carew, NY Tribune

PowerPoint Presentation:

In my retired corner I seemed to see again, as once before, at dusk, the flock of little lambkins in the park, newly born and bleating.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The vision deepened and changed until in place of these were the other flocks of Scriptural days, on the slopes of Mt. Carmel , near the Galilean Sea, those watched over by the shepherds at night.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The monotone ceased. I blinked my eyes. Everybody in the room was standing , breathlessly expectant. I rose mechanically.

PowerPoint Presentation:

‘Abdu’l-Bahá entered . Reported by Kate Carew, NY Tribune

"Master, we have just been married.” :

"Master, we have just been married.” … a blushing young woman introduced her escort .

PowerPoint Presentation:

Such a look of joy illumined the face that in repose looks like a sheet of parchment on which Fate has scored deep, cabalistic lines.

PowerPoint Presentation:

He did not want to leave them.

PowerPoint Presentation:

He held their hands a long time, then turned and blessed the young man.

PowerPoint Presentation:

My dears, if that young man ever thinks of straying from the path of loyalty, methinks the pressure of that hand will weigh heavy on his soul! Reported by Kate Carew, NY Tribune

"Will the East and West ever be united?" :

" Will the East and West ever be united?"

PowerPoint Presentation:

" It would be impossible by the natural forces only , but that union between the East and the West, of love between the people here and there, will come through the spiritual power.”

PowerPoint Presentation:

Mahomet Ali, ( Bahá’u’lláh) the founder of the Bahaite faith, said that if He could spend all the cash of the universe to bring love among mankind it would result in failure.

PowerPoint Presentation:

But with the spiritual power He succeeded in making the people of the East and the people of the West love each other.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Your coming here tonight proves this. It is a gift of God . Reported by Kate Carew, NY Tribune

PowerPoint Presentation:

I find the Baha seated in a comfortable easy chair at the bay window.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Dr . Fareed sits near Him as soon as I have taken my place.

PowerPoint Presentation:

His beautiful voice, like a golden echo, follows close the termination of each sentence.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The M aster looks very spiritual.

PowerPoint Presentation:

He is in a relaxed attitude, sometimes " going into the silence .”

PowerPoint Presentation:

So much more akin to the spirit world than this does He seem, that I find myself often addressing Dr . Fareed personally , referring to Him in the third person . Reported by Kate Carew, NY Tribune

PowerPoint Presentation:

" Do you think our luxury degenerate ,” I ask, " as in this great hotel?”

PowerPoint Presentation:

‘ Abdu’l-Bahá strokes His long white beard.

PowerPoint Presentation:

" Luxury has a limit. Beyond that limit it is not commendable. There is such a thing as moderation. Men must be temperate in all things.” Reported by Kate Carew, NY Times

The Bowery Mission:

April 19, 1912 227 Bowery in Lower Manhattan ‘Abdu’l-Bahá delivered an address to 400 poor – placing a coin in the hand of each person as they left the meeting. The Bowery Mission

PowerPoint Presentation:

Just before the services were concluded I saw the courier stealthily approach the platform and hand the Bahá a green baize bag.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Of course, I wasn’t going to let that go on without finding out all about it, and to my whispered inquiry the Bahá said, smilingly:

PowerPoint Presentation:

“ Some little lucky bits I am going to distribute to the men.” Reported by Kate Carew, NY Tribune

PowerPoint Presentation:

What you don’t expect! I had the surprise of my life!

PowerPoint Presentation:

For what do you suppose those lucky bits were?

PowerPoint Presentation:

Silver quarters, two hundred dollars’ worth of them!

There! Guess you didn’t expect it, either. :

There! Guess you didn’t expect it, either.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Think of it! Some one actually coming to America and distributing money.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Not here with the avowed intention of taking away. Reported by Kate Carew, NY Tribune

PowerPoint Presentation:

It seems incredible !

PowerPoint Presentation:

Possibly I may be a little tired of mere words, dealing in them the way I do, but that demonstration of ‘Abdu'l-Bahá's creed did more to convince me of the absolute sincerity of the man than anything else that had happened.

PowerPoint Presentation:

And it was all done so unostentatiously , so gracefully , without any fuss or fume. Reported by Kate Carew, NY T ribune

PowerPoint Presentation:

The Master stood.

PowerPoint Presentation:

His eyes always turned away from the man facing Him , far down the line… four of five beyond Him vis-à-vis,

PowerPoint Presentation:

so that when a particularly desperate looking specimen came along, He was all ready for him,

PowerPoint Presentation:

and , instead of one quarter, two were quietly pressed into the calloused palm. Reported by Kate Carew, NY Tribune
