OXFORD INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLElementary SectionMath Practice «Properties of Addition and Multiplication» 5 graders April 9, 2010 By Teacher Abnel Chavez

I. Addition Properties :

I. Addition Properties There are four mathematical properties which involve addition. The properties are the commutative, associative, additive identity and distributive properties. 1. Commutative property: When two numbers are added, the sum is the same regardless of the order of the addends. For example 4 + 2 = 2 + 4 2. Associative Property: When three or more numbers are added, the sum is the same regardless of the grouping of the addends. For example (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4)

...I. Addition Properties :

...I. Addition Properties 3. Additive Identity Property: The sum of any number and zero is the original number. For example 5 + 0 = 5. 4. Distributive property: The sum of two numbers times a third number is equal to the sum of each addend times the third number. For example 4 x (6 + 3) = 4x6 + 4x3

II. Multiplication Properties :

II. Multiplication Properties There are five properties involving multiplication that will help make problems easier to solve. They are the commutative, associative, multiplicative identity, distributive properties and zero property. 1. Commutative property: When two numbers are multiplied together, the product is the same regardless of the order of the multiplicands. For example 4 x 2 = 2 x 4 2. Associative Property: When three or more numbers are multiplied, the product is the same regardless of the grouping of the factors. For example (2 x 3) x 4 = 2 x (3 x 4)

...II.Multiplication Properties :

...II.Multiplication Properties 3. Multiplicative Identity Property: The product of any number and one is that number. For example 5 x 1 = 5. 4. Distributive property: The sum of two numbers times a third number is equal to the sum of each addend times the third number. For example 4 x (6 + 3) = 4x6 + 4x3 5. Zero Property: any number multiply by zero is equal to zero. For example 5 x 0 = 0
