Where do we live…?

First settlers : 

Czyżew Osada is a really old village. First settlers from the heart of Mazowsze came here in the 11th century. In the half of 16th century Czyżew was divided into afewvillages under the common name of Czyżewo. In 1738 the town was granted town rights by King August III. Until 16th century Czyżew was settled only by Christians but after gaining town rights Jewish people began to arrive in Czyżew. . First settlers

The population of Czyzew consisted mainly of craftsmen and traders. The further development of the town was influenced by construction of the Warsaw – Petersburg railway, which divided Czyzew into two parts . The villagers who lived around the town were farmers. History

In 1870 Czyzew was deprived of its town rights as a punishment for participation its dwellers in an uprising against Russia. On the turn of 19th and 20th century stone houses were built. The church was the central structure of the town and stood on the Big Square along with stall merchant houses and stalls. They were totally devastated in the fire resulting from air raid by German planes in September 1939. Later Soviets created a park with Lenin statue in that place. German occupants made Jewish dwellers to sink the statue in the Brok River where it has been lying near the base of the bridge until the present times.

Monument in Czyżew : 

In 1931 a statue was built to commemorate Józef Piłsudski and killed Polish soldiers. The statue was a three metre column with an inscription “Glory for the heroes killed in fight for the country’s independence”, which was destroyed and buried by Soviet soldiers in 1939. It was dug out in 1981 and put in its former place. It was renovated radically in 2003 and a sculpture of eagle was added to it. Monument in Czyżew

The war of 1939 commenced with an air raid of the railway station. Czyzew was under the Soviet occupation on the basis of the Soviet – German treaty about the demarcation line in October 1939. Although the Soviet occupation did not last for a long time, the local population felt its severe impact due to forced deportations to Syberia. Czyżew became under the German occupation in June 1941. Soon after that Gestapo troops started to eradicate of Jewish population. Some Jews were sent to a ghetto where they were murdered in winter of 1942. .

In the area of Czyżew, people organized the resistance movement. The education was banned and the school was closed. The air command post was located in the school building. However, the secret schooling was organized in the local villages. On 19th August 1944, Czyżew was liberated by the Soviet Army and the new phase in the town’s history began.
