VARICELLA HERPES ZOSTER   Varicella Herpes Virus (VZV) belong to the Herpes Virus Family. This virus causes two major diseases, chicken-pox (Varicella), usually in childhood, and shingles, later in life. Shingles (Zoster) is a reactivation of an earlier varicella infection. It is spread by respiratory aerosols or direct contact with skin lesions

PowerPoint Presentation:

The outer envelope of the Varicella zoster virus is a lipid envelope, so VZV is very fragile. The sensitive lipid envelope is the reason direct contact is needed for infection to occur (Hunt, 2004).

PowerPoint Presentation:

Left image shows overall structure of Varicella zoster virus. Right image shows naked capsids of Varicella zoster virus. Photo copied from ICTV Picture Gallery and Pathogen The outer envelope of the virus is a lipid envelope, so VZV is very fragile. The lipid envelope is sensitive to drying, acids, detergents, and organic solvents. If the virus is exposed to any of these things, the envelope will fall apart and the virus will subsequently not be infectious. The sensitive lipid envelope is the reason direct contact is needed for infection to occur (Hunt, 2004). Live VZV vaccine is also used to prevent infection by causing the body to produce antibodies against the virus (Varicella Virus Vaccine Live (Systemic), 1998).
