FIGURES OF SPEECH SIMILE METAPHOR PERSONIFICATION HYPERBOLE IRONY ONOMATOPOEIA ALLITERATION REPETITION

SIMILE:

SIMILE A simile is a definite expression of a likeness between two different objects, events. A simile is usually introduced by such words- like, as, as…as. EXAMPLE- King Richard was as brave as a lion. Her lips are as red as a rose. She looks like her mother.

METAPHOR:

METAPHOR A metaphor is an implied simile. In a simile two different objects are compared by means of such words-like,as,as..as. In a Metaphor things compared are brought closer together. EXAMPLE-Life is a dream. My father is Hitler. He is now in the sunset{decline}of his days.

PERSONIFICATION:

PERSONIFICATION In this figure of speech inanimate objects or qualities are spoken off as if they were persons or human beings. EXAMPLE-Opportunity knocks at the door but once. The moon was dying with a stare. Venice is the oldest child of Liberty.

HYPERBOLE:

HYPERBOLE The word Hyperbole means exaggeration and by this figure things are represented as greater or less than they really are. EXAMPLE-She wept oceans of tears. I have not seen her for ages. When she smiled all the world was gay.

IRONY:

IRONY By this figure we say one thing when we mean just the opposite. EXAMPLE-I shall lose no time in reading your book. Who you all know are honorable mean.

ONOMATOPOEIA:

ONOMATOPOEIA It signifies the use of a word that is formed from the sound. It is intended to represent. Such words are- THUD,BOOM,PUFF-PUFF,BOUVOUL. This occur mostly in poetry. EXAMPLE-The murmurous sound of flies on summer eves. Sound words like-Sound of gun, drum, trumpet, blunderbuss and thunder , crack ,growled, roared and howled.

ALLITERATION:

ALLITERATION This consists in the repetition of one or more similar sound or letters at the beginning of two or more words. EXAMPLE-How high his highness holds his head. A load of learning lumbering in his head.

REPETITION:

REPETITION This consists in repetition of words. EXAMPLE-My love is like red red rose.
