Premium member Presentation Transcript Slide 1: Sojourner Truth By: Abigail Santa (1797-1883) The birth of Isabella Baumfree : The birth of Isabella Baumfree Isabella Baumfree (Sojourner Truth) was born in 1797 She was born in a Dutch settlement in Ulster County, Upstate New York Isabella was 1 0f 13 children born from Elizabeth and James Baumfree Owners/Masters : Owners/Masters Isabella spoke only Dutch until she was sold from her family in 1808 She learned English quickly because she was beaten by her new owner for her miscommunications of his orders She was then sold 2 years later (1810) to John Dumont in New Paltz, New York John Dumont abused Isabella sexually and physically Family : Family In 1815 Isabella fell in love with a slave named Robert One night he came to visit Isabella with his owner and after they were together his owner dragged him off and Isabella never saw him again Later, Isabella had a baby which she named Diana In 1817 Isabella was forced to marry an older slave named Thomas Isabella and Thomas had four children – Peter (Born in 1822) James (Died at birth) Elizabeth (Born in 1825) Sophia (Born in 1826) Later in life…. : Later in life…. 1827 – Slavery was abolished in New York, but Isabella Baumfree had already ran away with her daughter Diana Her other children did not go because they were sold as slaves In 1843 Isabella became a traveling preacher and changed her name to Sojourner Truth The North Hampton Association of Education : The North Hampton Association of Education Sojourner Truth joined the North Hampton Association of Education (a group of 210 people) The association was founded by abolitionists to promote productive work They were strongly anti-slavery, religiously tolerant, women’s rights supporters and pacifist They lived on 500 acres of farmland raising livestock, running grist, saw mills, and operating a silk factory Sojourner met and worked with William Lloyd Garrison, Fredrick Douglas and David Ruggles What was Sojourner Truth famous for? : What was Sojourner Truth famous for? In 1851 Sojourner went to the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention and gave a powerful speech called, “Ain’t I A Woman?” This speech was taken down and published by Frances D.
