DISCOVERED BY JANITOR : DISCOVERED BY JANITOR Late in the afternoon of March 28, 1928, a janitor at St. Philip School noticed smoke coming from the church. He tried to put the fire out with a garden hose. FIRE DEPARTMENT CALLED : FIRE DEPARTMENT CALLED The janitor saw the fire was too large for his small garden hose. A Sister from the convent called the police, and a man pulled the fire alarm on Box 412 across from the burning church. FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVES : FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVES When the Battle Creek Fire Department arrived, the firemen saw thick smoke pouring out from the burning church. BEGIN FIGHTING THE FIRE : BEGIN FIGHTING THE FIRE The firemen took out their hoses and began pouring water onto the church. CROWDS GATHER TO WATCH : CROWDS GATHER TO WATCH Word spread through the city that St. Philip was burning, and soon hundreds of people gathered to watch the fire department fight the blaze. FIRE BURNS THROUGH ROOF : FIRE BURNS THROUGH ROOF The crowd of people watched in horror as the fire burned through the roof. They knew then that the fire was very serious. CHILDREN WATCH : CHILDREN WATCH As the fire spread across the roof, the children watched sadly as their church burned down. SLATE ROOF DANGER : SLATE ROOF DANGER Heavy slate shingles began sliding down from the highest points of the roof and fell upon the firemen. The firemen were glad they were wearing helmets to protect their heads. ROOF CAVES IN : ROOF CAVES IN Soon, the burning roof began to cave in. As it fell into the church, pews were crushed and marble altars damaged. Water from the fire hoses continued to pour into the church. CROWD GETS BIGGER : CROWD GETS BIGGER The crowd watching the fire grew larger and larger. SMOKE FILLS DOWNTOWN : SMOKE FILLS DOWNTOWN Thick black smoke from the fire filled the entire downtown area. Firemen became worried that the walls of the church might fall down and crush the people who were watching the fire. THE DREAM BEGINS : THE DREAM BEGINS St. Philip began to dream about building a new church. Architects drew plans showing what their new church would look like. A NEW BEGINNING : A NEW BEGINNING Finally St. Philip raised enough money and was able to begin building their new church. DEDICATION : DEDICATION A little more than two years after their church had been destroyed by fire, the Bishop came to Battle Creek in June of 1930 to dedicate St. Philip’s new church building.
