Slide 5:

......Globalization (or globalization) describes a process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a global network of communication, transportation, and trade. The term is sometimes used to refer specifically to economic globalization: the integration of national economies into the international economy0 through trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, migration, and the spread of technology.[1] However, globalization is usually recognized as being driven by a combination of economical, technological, sociocultural, political, and biological factors.[2] The term can also refer to the transnational circulation of ideas, languages, or popular culture through acculturation. Slide 14:

Political Globalization Nation states are less able to control social and economic events within their territory. Global/regional decision-making bodies (UN, EU, etc.) are rising in importance but… They are not yet fully democratic/accountable “CNN” effect pressures governments to intervene on human rights violations. International non-state actors have gained power.

Effects of Globalization

Slide 16:

Contradictions in Globalization Globalization has many inherent contradictions including It integrates and disintegrates. It fosters cooperation and conflict. It engenders order and disorder. It is divisive and unifying. Some view it as a net POSITIVE while, some as a net NEGATIVE. So far globalization has both positive and negative effect on the global peace......

Slide 17:

Positive Effects Globalization has created the concept of outsourcing. Work such as software development, customer support, marketing, accounting and insurance is outsourced to developing countries like India. So the company that outsourced the work enjoys the benefit of lower costs because the wages in developing countries is far lower than that of developed countries. The workers in the developing countries get employment. Developing countries get access to the latest technology. Increased competition forces companies to lower prices. This benefits the end consumers. Increased media coverage draws the attention of the world to human right violations. This leads to improvement in human rights.

Slide 18:

Negative Effects Globalization has led to exploitation of labor. Prisoners and child workers are used to work in inhumane conditions. Safety standards are ignored to produce cheap goods. The benefits of globalization is not universal. The rich are getting richer and the poor are becoming poorer. Bad aspects of foreign cultures are affecting the local cultures through TV and the Internet and due to this enemy nations can spread propaganda through the Internet. Local industries are being taken over by foreign multinationals.
