Slide1: During the Civil War, President Lincoln fought for Emancipation
and in 1865 the 13th Amendment was ratified to abolish slavery in
the United States.
Slide2: Born into slavery, Harriet Tubman escaped in 1849 and helped over seventy slaves escape to freedom as a conductor of the Underground Railroad.
Slide3: Born a slave, Frederick Douglass would become a trusted advisor to President Abraham Lincoln and Marshal for the District of Columbia.
He was a proponent of equal rights and justice for all.

On August 28, 1963, over 250,000 people marched from the
Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, uniting for the end of racial discrimination and segregation.
Slide5: Martin Luther King Jr. fought for progress as a prominent leader in the Civil Rights movement, and is best known for his legendary “I Have A Dream” speech.
In 1964, he became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and discrimination.
Slide6: Thurgood Marshall fought for civil rights and was known for his victory in Brown v. Board of Education.
On June 13, 1967, he became the first African American to serve on
the Supreme Court of the United States.
Slide7: On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama became the first African American to be elected President of the United States.
Before a crowd of hundreds of thousands of supporters gathered in Chicago, Obama declared:
“Change has come to America.”
