What IS Pulitzer Prize ?? Annual awards for achievements in American journalism, literature & music, fellowship are also awarded. Prizes are paid from the income of fund left by Joseph Pulitzer to the trusties of Columbia University, they have been awarded each may since 1917, on the recommendation of the advisory board comprising journalist. Each winner receives a certificate and US$10,000 cash award. The winner in public service category of the journalism competition is awarded a gold medal, which always goes to a news paper.

History … The price established by Joseph Pulitzer, journalist and news paper publisher, who founded the St.Louis Post-Dispatch and bought the New York World. Pulitzer left money US$ 5, 00,000 to Columbia University upon his death in 1911. A portion of his bequest was used to found the university’s journalism school in 1912. The first Pulitzer prize were awarded 4 th June 1917,now they announced in each April and awarded each May since 1917, on the recommendation of the Pulitzer prize board, composed of judges appointed by the university, The numbers & categories have been varied over the years, today they include 14 awards in journalism, 6 in literature, 1 in music and 4 fellowships.

Medal: Awarded each year to American news paper that wins the public service category.It is never awarded to an individual. In 1918, the medal was designed by sculptor Daniel Chester French and his associate Henry Augustus Lukeman . Which is now symbolize the entire Pulitzer program. One side of the medal displays the profile of Benjamin Franklin, apparently based on the bust by the French Sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. Decorating the other side is a husky, bare chested printer at work, his shirt draped across the end of a press. Surrounding the printer are the words: “For disinterested and meritorious public service rendered by an American news paper during the year…”, The name of winning news paper is inscribed on the Franklin Side of the medal. The year of the award is memorialized on the other side.

AM I eligible to apply ?? The Pulitzer Prize does not automatically evaluate all applicable works in the media, but only those who have entered with $ 50 Entry fee (One per Desire Entry). Entries must fit in at least one of the specific prize category & can not simply gain entrance on having general literary or compositional properties. Work can only be entered into a maximum of two prize categories, regardless of their properties. Nationality is no bar in Journalism and History category but only published reports and photographs by U.S. based news paper or Daily News Organizations are eligible for Journalism Prize. In history category the book must be a history of U.S.

How People Criticize us.. ?? Some critics of the Pulitzer Prize have accused the organization of favoring those who support liberal causes or oppose conservative causes. Syndicated columnist L.Brent Bozell said that the Pulitzer Prize has “Liberal Legacy”, particularly in its prize for commentary. He pointed to 31 year period for commentary. The claim is also supported by a statement from the 2010 Pulitzer Prize winner for commentary. Kathleen Parker, “Its only because I’m a conservative basher that I’m now recognized.”

Kennedy is the only U.S. president who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize (1957 in biography for his book “Profiles in Courage”) There are 21 Pulitzer categories. In 20 of those categories the winners receive a $ 10,000 cash award and a certificate. Only the winner in the public service category of the journalism competition is awarded a gold medal. The public service price is always awarded to a news paper, not an individual, although an individual may be named in citation. Only U.S. citizens are eligible to apply for the prize in the literature, Drama and Music (with the exception of the history category in literature where the book must be a history of United States but the author may be from any nationality).
