As with any design, you always have to keep originality in the forefront of your mind as you make your logos or the back-front, or in whatever area of the brain controls that kind of stuff really. Make sure that the design you have created does not just blend in with masses of others that we are inundated with on the daily, failing to have the original qualities necessary to stand out.

DESIGN DEV LOGO Characteristic of Great Logos ADMIN - MARCH 29 2016 1. Simple Simple logos are the ones people can recognize as soon as they see them. The simplest logos are the ones people remember the most. 2. Distinct The owner of a business wants their business remembered and is separate from any of his competitors and a distinctive logo is an important feature. A logo which is distinctly different and yet still pleasing to the eye can help your business stand out from your competitors 3. Adaptive To be adaptive is to be conscious of applicability while allowing a certain degree of creative freedom and flexibility to the design process. As a graphic logo designer I sometimes find it difficult not to follow the lure of creative expression out into the sea of intentions. We’ve all been there you are deep into the creative process and inspiration suddenly hits you and all you can think about is the product itself and not its connection to the brand or business whether it be a medical logo bank logo or a small service provider logo. 4. It should be described A good logo is always easy to describe. Pretty much everyone can explain what the McDonalds Nike and Adidas logos look like because the images are simple clear and eye-catching. 5. Versatile A great logo should look equally good on any web device and on any kind of print material. 6. Appropriate Using the logo throughout the sales presentation on the business cards on the mailing material will increase the effectiveness of the logo and designs and enhance branding in the consumer’s mind. Using the design and logo consistently across the marketing material will enhance the effectiveness of the tools and bring them together in the customer’s mind. 

7. Professional Just as the business office conveys a message of the level of professionalism in a firm so does the logo and the designs used by a company in marketing themselves. A professionally designed logo uses the color palette fonts and icons chosen to send a message conveys a high level of professionalism and this increases consumer trust. 8. Looks good in Black and White When choosing a logo it is essential that it should please the eye and be memorable but it should also be printable in black and white and visible to persons who have colour blindness. A high contrast logo is essential for both of these. 9. Targeted As with any business endeavor understanding your audience is the key. Whatever your industry your logo needs to be able to connect with the people you are marketing to. “The important thing a logo needs to do is to speak to your target audience”. 10. Memorable Making a logo that’s memorable may seem complex it’s of great importance. “A great logo will remain memorable enough that a person who has only seen the logo once should still be able to recall it enough to describe the logo to someone else. This is not the easiest of qualities to impart but it is certainly a high ranking one so make sure your designs stays in their minds. 11. Originality As with any design you always have to keep originality in the forefront of your mind as you make your logos…or the back-front or in whatever area of the brain controls that kind of stuff really. Clean and Clear One of the characteristics that went want to mention here that help to establish the great from the good are make the logo clean and clear. We figure if it works for skin care then it must be true of logos. Kidding. But once again consider the point of making the design in the first place to represent and embody the client’s business. If your design does not cleanly and clearly convey that to the viewer then it hasn’t been the biggest of successes. 13. Timeless DON’T be too trendy. DO aim for longevity. “Trends come and go and when you’re talking about changing a pair of jeans or buying a new dress that’s fine but where your brand identity is concerned longevity is key.” 14. Wrap Up That concludes our look at logos and the characteristics to keep an eye on as you embark down the logo design road.

Some typefaces are so memorable and unique that no one yet has been able to copy them. 8.
