Response to Intervention:

By: Colin Hackett Response to Intervention

What is RtI?:

What is RtI? Response to intervention, or RtI, is an approach to academic intervention that utilizes evidence-based interventions and progress monitoring in order to help students succeed in the classroom.

3 tiered model:

3 tiered model RtI utilizes a 3-Tiered model. In the 1 st tier, students are assessed to see if they are meeting the benchmark requirements for their current grade level. This assessment usually takes place three times a year. If they score in the bottom 20 th percentile, they are then moved into Tier 2. Tier 2 is were a student is given an evidence-based intervention and is then monitored on a weekly basis to see if they are responding to the intervention or not. It the student is not responding, they move into Tier 3. Tier 3 is when a student is given a modified and more intensive intervention than previously offered din Tier 2. That student is also monitored on a more consistent basis and if they are still not responding to the intervention, that student will generally be assessed for special education.

Evidence-based interventions:

Evidence-based interventions Evidence -based refers to interventions that are supported with scientific findings. What this means is that the evidence-based intervention have been proven to be effective. For students, this is a wonderful thing because it means that the intervention that they will be receiving has been proven to be helpful and that student will more than likely benefit from this type of intervention . This is important in RtI because when a student needs an intervention they need one that has been proven to work because they are more than likely behind in school and can’t waste time with an intervention that may not work.

Types of interventions:

Types of interventions RtI has the capacity to offered interventions in most educational subjects, such as reading, writing, and math. Currently, most of the research is done on reading interventions, but there are several interventions available for math and writing as well.

How rti is beneficial for teachers:

How rti is beneficial for teachers RtI can be extremely useful for classroom teachers While constant assessment may seem tedious, By continually assessment of students can show the classroom teacher if their teaching strategies are effective or if they need to be altered or changed. If most students are not meeting the benchmark requirements, the teacher will then know to change their teaching strategies in order to meet the needs of their students.

How rti benefits students:

How rti benefits students Since RtI is an evidence-based practice, students that need an intervention will receive one that has been proven to be effective. The continual assessment will also help students by catching the student that needs help before they fall behind.
