This trend is more pronounced at less selective state universities but still has taken a toll at selective private universities. It is the goal of this project to uncover the root causes of the problem and provide recommendations for solutions as well as ways to curb this trend in the future .CURRENT SITUATION: CURRENT SITUATION In order to understand the problem of completion and retention rates at Saint Louis University one must first take a look at the larger picture of higher education in United States. This trend demonstrates itself in a more pronounced manner for less selective public universities but selective private universities also suffer from the same problem (Carey, Hess, Kelly, & Schneider, 2009). The larger national trend also demonstrates itself at the local level at universities in St. Louis. Saint Louis University reports a slow but steady decline in completion rates despite increases in applications and admissions (Saint Louis University, 2011).DATA ON CURRENT PROBLEM: DATA ON CURRENT PROBLEMWe have identified the problem. What’s our next step? : We have identified the problem. What’s our next step? Identify what contributed to the problem and exam the root causes Determine what’s at stake if we fail to act Review and examine our current processes for improvement Generate and implement solutions Evaluate their effectiveness Be proactive! The country as a whole currently suffers from a decline in college completion rates More selective private universities suffer from a decline in completion and retention rates as well. INCREASE RESOURCES TO DEVELOP MORE AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS 5. INCREASE STUDENT AWARENESS OF RESOURCESLET’S MAKE IT WORK! STEP BY STEP: LET’S MAKE IT WORK! STEP BY STEP STEP 1: Contact the Enrollment and Retention Management department at Saint Louis University. STEP 2: Submit the proposal to the department for review STEP 3: Wait for approvalLET’S MAKE IT WORK! STEP BY STEP: LET’S MAKE IT WORK! STEP BY STEP STEP 4: Perform cost analysis on approved proposal. STEP 5: Submit specific parts to individual schools and departments. STEP 6: Develop corporate support through partnerships with the programs.HOW ARE WE DOING? EVALUATION METHODS: HOW ARE WE DOING? EVALUATION METHODS Monitor the overall retention rate. Individual departments involved will conduct surveys . Conduct student surveys at the end of the expanded SLU 101 and University 101 sessions. Implement selective focus groups to recruit and solicit feedback on the programs.CONCLUSION: CONCLUSIONFUTURE ACTIONS: FUTURE ACTIONS Update the SLU website with information regarding these programs. Incorporate the additional staffing needed for these programs into the budget. Implement feedback surveys .
