High School Football Players are judged and discriminated against based on the color of their skin Parents won’t let their children play football in high school if blacks and whites are playing on the same team Parents called the Board of Education yelling about their concerns of the newly appointed black coach (ignoring the fact that he had won championships in North Carolina where he previously coachedSlide 13: SUMMARY OF REMEMBER THE TITANS In 1971, the city of Alexandria, Virginia, integrated its school system and appointed Herman Boone, then an assistant football coach, as its first consolidated head football coach over a legendary white coach with several years seniority and a steadfast citywide following. However, Herman Boone along with Bill Yoast, was able to pull together and solidify an unfocused g roup of young boys into a powerful football team, setting the tone for the entire community. The 1971 TITANS were ranked Second in the NATION and WON the state championship. The willingness of these young men to talk to each other, along with their determination to win, brought together a city torn apart by prejudice and hatred. In December, 1971 President Richard M. Nixon was quoted as saying, “The team saved the city of Alexandria.” Herman Boone and Bill Yoast are true symbols of social transformation (being culturally responsive). Their friendship inspired the 2000 blockbuster film Remember The Titans, starring Denzel Washington as Herman Boone and Will Patton as Bill Yoast. (I cry every time I watch the movie.)Slide 18: COACH BOONE Black coach hired over the popular white coach Bill Yoast with an excellent coaching record Had to deal with the1971 Supreme Court ruling that stated that 3 high schools in Alexandria, VA must merge into one Had to deal with parents being opposed to the different races mixing together and the players’ loyalties to their old high schools Besides getting the football players to trust one another on and off the field he had to move his family into an all white neighborhood….and WIN THE FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!Slide 19: COACH YOAST Had to deal with being a successful coach at Hammond High School to an assistant coach T.C. They do speaking engagements on diversity around the country and they were excellent speakers. It was a small audience of 15-20 people. They were entertaining and stayed and answered everyone's questions and took pictures. If you haven’t seen the movie you must rent it. I asked them how much was embellished to add drama to the movie and were their any fictionalized scenes. They said every single line and all scenes were accurate. There was not one fictionalized scene.
