History of UTEP Library:

History of UTEP Library Current building opened October 12 1984 at the request of UTEP president Dr. Haskell Monroe Previous building was too small and did not have the Bhutanese architecture prevalent on campus UTEP struggled with UT System in order to keep the building's construction on the agenda. Everything from architectural design to the construction of the building was handled locally

Growth and Development:

Growth and Development UTEP Library has grown to facilitate interactions between two nations in El Paso and Juarez Providing the library with proper funding is closely related to the prestige of an institution Development must be facilitated through financial contributions from Friends of the Library

Vision, Mission and Goals:

Vision, Mission and Goals " The library provides innovative and high quality services, programs, and resources that support UTEP's stated mission of education, research, scholarship, and community service. The library provides access to a range of print and electronic information resources that meet the individual needs of its users in its multicultural university community and the U.S. – Mexico Border Region. The Friends of the Library:

The Friends of the Library The Problem: As the State of Texas heads into an unprecedented budget crisis, it may become necessary for the Friends of the UTEP Library to contribute more financially. This will require UTEP Library to clearly state its value on campus and its reasons for requiring additional funding.

Nature of the Communication Strategy:

Nature of the Communication Strategy Lack of communication on proper use of library between faculty and students No effective instruction program for entering students Proper utilization of resources has not been historically stressed

Current Communication Challenge:

Current Communication Challenge Information is perceived as being freely available via the internet Library is seen as no longer relevant Library's curatorial role is downplayed Information literacy concepts may seem foreign to college students and are widely misunderstood .

Proposed Solution:

Proposed Solution Integration between marketing and instruction committees for more comprehensive coverage Closer relationship with UTEP's entering student program Effective communication of these efforts and their results to the Friends of the Library
