The comparison of two George William Russell poems:

The comparison of two George William Russell poems Dream Love & The Dream By George William Russell

The Dream:

The Dream I WOKE to find my pillow wet With the tears for deeds deep hid in sleep. I knew no sorrow here, but yet The tears fell softly through the deep. Your eyes, your other eyes of dream, Looked at me through the veil of blank; I saw their joyous, starlit gleam Like one who watches rank on rank. His victor airy legions wind And pass before his awful throne— Was there thy loving heart unkind, Was I thy captive all o’erthrown ?

Annotation:

Annotation In the first stanza he wakes up to find that he had been crying but yet he has no idea why he is crying because he has nothing to cry about. In the next stanza he sees her eyes but not her actual eyes but her dream eyes, glistening and joyous. The final stanza isn't very clear to me. When I read this I picture a kingdom and a great king who's come back from war and asks his queen if he was unkind and cold hearted.

Dream Love:

Dream Love I DID not deem it half so sweet To feel thy gentle hand, As in a dream thy soul to greet Across wide leagues of land. Untouched more near to draw to you Where, amid radiant skies, Glimmered thy plumes of iris hue, My Bird of Paradise. Let me dream only with my heart, Love first, and after see: Know thy diviner counterpart Before I kneel to thee. So in thy motions all expressed Thy angel I may view: I shall not on thy beauty rest, But beauty’s self in you.

Annotation:

Annotation In the first stanza the poem is talking about how no matter the distance it is so sweet to feel ones gentle hand. In the second stanza is a tad confusing but to me when he saying she's his bird of paradise he's saying that she is special and even though they aren't together right now he still loves her so. in the next stanza he's saying how only dreaming with your heart puts love first and foremost. And the part where he says “kneel to thee” I picture his proposing to her. In the last stanza he loves her for not beauty but her beauty on the inside.

Comparison :

Comparison The Dream In this poem I was very confused. Towards the end I pictured kings and queens and castles. This poem is different from the other because it is definitely not loving at al. I felt like it was very mysterious and frightening. Dream Love In the poem Dream L ove I truly felt his love for her. When he talks about how much he wants to touch her hand and how he loves her for her beauty on the inside I thought it was so sweet and loving. This is the kind of poem girls love to read. The difference between this poem and the poem The Dream is that in this poem is about love and keeping love together no matter the distance.
