How to install hardware to a computer system :

How to install hardware to a computer system By James Ebner

Introduction :

Introduction In this video I will demonstrate how to prepare a system for an upgrade and create a video show how the installations should be done talking precautions and using safe working practices. I will also show how the hardware may need to be configured.

P.C Audit :

P.C Audit To begin you will need to do a system audit this may consist of going into the device manager and writing down all the system components to see what needs to be upgraded. The other way you could do this is by downloading some free system audit software.

Choosing the upgrade:

Choosing the upgrade In most situations people want to make there computers faster and upgrade space so these are the components I will decide to do as the are the most common. RAM Hard Drive

Preparing for the installation :

Preparing for the installation Before you start you will need to prepare all your equipment. You will need: One standard flat head screwdriver - One standard star head screwdriver + A well lit bench or table that allows you to place you case flat on its side with enough space to set some or all of your components around it. A torch. Sometimes it can be difficult to see in a dark corner of the case.

RAM (Random Access Memory):

RAM (Random Access Memory) Currently the system has 256 MB of ram and it has 1 slot left available. Therefore I think this would be a good component to upgrade as it will speed up the performance of the system as it can run more applications more efficiently. Also ram is needed to keep you computer up to date and so it can run the latest applications.

Hard Drive:

Hard Drive The current hard drive has a total space of 19 GB with 16.6 GB free. What I plan to do is keep the old hard drive and use is as a slave and get a bigger hard drive to make sure you can fit all of you music and you applications therefore you will not run out of space and this will be a big advantage if you play games with a big size or use lots of multimedia applications. Also the cost of large hard drives are not very much so this would be a valued upgrade.

Hard Drive installation:

Hard Drive installation You begin by screwing your hard drive into the mount slot. After this take the power cable and place it into the slot provided it should be the small socket. After this all you need to do is place the ATA cable into the other socket this should be the long socket with square pins in. All cables are designed to go in one way so you should have no problem with this. After this place the hard drive in the mount and screw it back in.

RAM Installation :

RAM Installation Installing RAM is as an easy task all you have to do is make sure that you have a slot free after this it is as simple as taking your RAM and slotting in to the free slot it will only go in one way so do not force it in. Is you do force it in the wrong way when you turn the mother board on it will send will fry the motherboard. RAM is also a cheap component to upgrade so this will be a upgrade which will be value for money.

Testing you upgrades:

Testing you upgrades There are two ways to check if you upgrades are successful it should show up when you start bios up it should show you have more RAM in the system and an extra hard drive. The other way of doing this is by going to device manager and looking for the components you installed.

Problems that can occur when upgrading Hard Drive:

Problems that can occur when upgrading Hard Drive Problem: Hard drive is not being detected by bios Solution: Check if you connected the IDE cable to the motherboard correctly, is pin 1 on the IDE cable connected to pin 1 on the IDE sockets on both motherboard connector and HDD connector. Check if the HDD jumper is set to master and any other device sharing the same cable is set to slave

Problems that can occur when upgrading RAM:

Problems that can occur when upgrading RAM Problems: Putting the RAM in wrong can cause the pins to brake and the ram to be rendered useless. Solutions: make sure the RAM is in correctly so that the pins are flat in the slot and clipped in.
