" Breast-Ironing " W hy SEX EDUCATION is very important in Africa .

Slide 133:

" Breast-ironing " of young girls, … A very harmful custom !

Slide 134:

'Breast Ironing' puts young West and Central African girls at risk!

Slide 135:

Breast ironing is the pounding and massaging of a pubescent girl's breasts using heated objects, in an attempt to make them stop developing or disappear. The mums say it’s driven by fear of unwanted male attention, rape and pre-marital pregnancies . According to UNFPA, breast ironing exposes girls to numerous health problems such as abscesses, infections, dissymmetry of the breasts, cysts, and even the complete disappearance of one or both breasts. Nevertheless breast ironing is widespread and interestingly, the high prevalence in cities attributed to the effects of urbanization.

Slide 136:

It is typically carried out by the girl's mother in an attempt to protect the girl from sexual harassment and rape, to prevent early pregnancy that would tarnish the family name, or to allow the girl to pursue education ...

Slide 137:

In Cameroon where the practice is most widespread, 50% of adolescent girls in cities and a quarter of all girls nationwide have their breasts ‘ironed,’ often by their mothers. The ‘ritual’ is performed by massaging the girls’ chests with heated objects like stones, in order to reverse their pubescent development.

Slide 139:

Civil wars, coup D'états… in West Africa are slowly but surely dying down, but horrific violence against women continues unabated -- and is growing increasingly worse.

Slide 161:

I t is estimated that a woman born in Africa has a greater chance of being raped than learning how to read . One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been raped in the past year.

Slide 162:

A survey conducted among 1,500 schoolchildren in the Soweto township, a quarter of all the boys interviewed said that ' jack rolling ', a term for gang rape , was fun .

Slide 163:

I t is estimated that more than 500,000 rapes are committed annually in South Africa alone. A 2010 study led by the government-funded Medical Research Foundation says that in Gauteng province, home to South Africa's most populous city of Johannesburg, more than 37 percent of men said they had raped a woman. Nearly 7 percent of the 487 men surveyed said they had participated in a gang rape.

Slide 164:

More than 35% of African men questioned in a survey admitted to raping someone; of those, nearly half said they had raped more than one person, according to a new study conducted by the Medical Research Council (MRC)

Slide 165:

Rape is an occurrence, which, according to official statistics occurred approximately 16,000 times annually during the 1980s.   By 2006 the official figure for rape was over 55 000 ,  unofficially, based on the premise put forward by the National Institute of Crime Rehabilitation that only one in twenty rapes are reported, the figure is over 494,000 a year.

Slide 166:

This means that on average approximately one thousand three hundred women can be expected to be raped a day in Africa. A woman is raped in Africa every 17 seconds. This did not include the number of child rape victims. It was estimated that one in every two women would be raped. Between 28 and 30 percent of adolescents reported that their first sexual encounter was forced.

Slide 167:

Sadly enough… of most African men who knew somebody who had been raped, 16 percent believed that the rape survivor had enjoyed the experience and had asked for it. According to a recent study, police estimated that only one in 36 rape cases was reported and of those only 15 percent culminated in a conviction.

L ike a voracious gang in a vicious wolf- pact, Most ferocious men of moment seem to rule and act! Oft irrational in thoughts, impassive verdicts before a fact V ery livid to care , yet too arrogant in their invidious ploys! In a sightless ego tirade, a scalawag reaps apart his toys… Thus common is the fate of women battered by willful boys H abitually I let my mind profoundly transcend and muse Of humanity void of psychosomatic and corporal abuse Where gender disparity get resolved without a fiery fuse, Where violence, inequity, hate… in unison we squash and refuse…
