Guided by :Moon R.S.DEFINATION: DEFINATION Compaction means some level of applied forces over the powdered solids. Hence compaction can be defined as compression and consolidation of a two phase (particulate solid-gas) system due to an applied force. Consolidation is an increase in the mechanical strength of the material resulting from particle particle interaction.compression:: compression: It is defined as the reduction in the volume of a powder owing to the application of a forces. Because of the increased proximity of particle surface accomplished during compression, bonds are formed between particles which provide coherence to the powder i.e. compact is formed.Powder properties : Powder properties Powders intended for compression into tablets must possess two essentional properties. Powder fluidity. Powder compressibility- The property of forming a stable, intact mass when pressure is applied.Compression properties: Compression properties Powders are normally compressed into tablet using a pressure of about 5.0kg/cm. this is called compaction and compression. This involves compressibility and compatibility. compressibility can be defined as the ability of a powder to decrease in volume under pressure. compatibility can be defined as the ability of a powder to be compressed into a tablet of a certain strength or hardness.COMPRESSION PROCESS: COMPRESSION PROCESS Filling - By gravitational flow of powder from hopper to die . The die is closed at its lower end by the lower punch. Compression - The upper punch descends and enters the die and the powder is compressed until a tablet is formed. During the compression phase lower punch can be stationary or can moves upwards in the die. Ejection - During this phase, the lower punch rise and the tablet is subsequently removed from the die.COMPRESSION PROCESS: COMPRESSION PROCESS The events that occur in the process of compression: Transitional repacking. Deformation at point of contact. Fragmentation &/or deformation. Bonding. Deformation of the solid body. Decompression. Ejection.effect: effect Following properties are significantly affected by compressional pressure. Density& porosity. Hardness & tensile strength. Specific surface. Disintegration. Dissolution. Friability.Tablet compression machine: Tablet compression machine Hopper for holding and feeding granules to be compressed. Dies that defines the size and shape of the tablet. Punches for compressing the granulation within the dies. Cam tracks for guiding the movement of the punches. Feeding mechanisms for moving granules from hopper into the dies.Slide 12: Thank you………………. You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
