Technology combines creative thinking and practical problem solving skills. The nature of the Technology key learning area Slide 4: Technology is an inventive process which arises from a human need, want or opportunity. It involves generating ideas and acting upon these to create innovative solutions/ ‘products’ that meet people’s needs. Slide 5: People have used the processes of Technology to design, develop and refine the products they need over the centuries. During the last century, with the accelerated pace of change, people have begun to recognise the process we describe as ‘Technology’. Slide 6: Technology is characterised by four interrelated processes. Ideating Producing Evaluating Investigating Need, want or opportunity Solution or product Participating in technological change : Participating in technological change Technology Education provides a: means for students to understand and meaningfully participate in the design and development of new and emerging technological development. critical framework to understand Technology and respond resourcefully to technological change. A practical area of learning : A practical area of learning Students learn about technology through active involvement in design challenges. Technology is a ‘hands-on’ area of learning. Students use creativity, practical problem solving and innovation to solve problems and turn ideas and concepts into models, prototypes and real products. Four interrelated strands : Four interrelated strands Technology Practice Materials Information Systems Slide 10: Technology is a core aspect of the curriculum for all students Years 1-10. Primary students all strands Secondary Technology practice and at least one other. Secondary schools : Secondary schools The Years 1-10 Technology syllabus provides a framework for: Agriculture, Business, Home Economics, Industrial Technology and Design, Information Communication and Tech. Students develop: : A critical framework (positive and negative implications) that technologies have on people and the environment. Practical problem solving skills and abilities - investigate and capitalise on opportunities to design and develop appropriate products Students develop: Learning outcomes : Range of Creative solutions Learning outcomes Design, develop and market an educational toy suitable for a pre-schooler.
