Elements of Art

Line:

Line A mark drawn by a tool such as a pencil, pen, or paintbrush as it moves across a surface. Lines can be: L o n g or short Thick or thin Rough or smooth Broken or solid

Shape:

Shape A shape is a flat, 2D area made by a line that is closed. Shapes can be: Geometric - which have rules about how they are formed Or Free Form – which are irregular and uneven. They can look many different ways.

Color:

Color Color is a visual characteristic of things that results from the light they emit, transmit, or reflect. The color spectrum is the range of colors visual to the human eye. These colors make up the rainbow.

Value:

Value Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. A tint is a lighter version of a color. A shade is a darker version of a color

Texture:

Texture A texture is how something feels or looks like it would feel.

Form:

Form A form is a 3D object that can be measured in three ways: height, width, and depth. 2D 3D

Space:

Space Space is the area above, below, between, within, and around an object.
