Intelligent Motor Control for Automated Lifestyles Pre-Training Video #1 : Basic Electrical

Basic Electrical Terms:

Basic Electrical Terms Intelligent Motor Control for Automated Lifestyles Wire Gage or AWG is the thickness of the wire. think of this as the diameter of the wire …think of an electrical circuit as water in a pipe Watt is a measure of the amount of electricity being used. think of this as the amount of water to flow through the pipe for a given amount of time Watts = Volts x Amps Volt is defined as a unit of electric potential or electromotive force. think of this as the water pressure in the pipe Volts = Watts / Amps Amperage or Amps is the flow rate of "electrical current ". think of this as the flow rate of the water in the pipe Amps = Watts / Volts

The Two Types of Electrical Current:

The Two Types of Electrical Current Intelligent Motor Control for Automated Lifestyles Direct Current (DC) VERY efficient when transmitted over short distances Alternating Current (AC) VERY efficient when transmitted over long distances AC is how power is delivered to buildings and homes.

Basic Electrical Circuit: Direct Current :

Basic Electrical Circuit: Direct Current Intelligent Motor Control for Automated Lifestyles DC = 100% of Circuit Rating e xample : 6 amp supply can support 6 amps Full Load Amps (FLA) = Full Load at Peak Operation Power Source Load

Basic Electrical Circuit: Direct Current :

Basic Electrical Circuit: Direct Current Intelligent Motor Control for Automated Lifestyles DC Wiring Considerations Must use a Transformer DC Transformers have input and output Amp levels ( always match shade motor load to output load ) Only need two wires per motor 16-18 AWG

Basic Electrical Circuit: Alternating Current :

Basic Electrical Circuit: Alternating Current Intelligent Motor Control for Automated Lifestyles AC = 80% of Circuit Rating e xample : 15 amp circuit can support 12 amps Full Load Amps (FLA) = Full Load at Peak Operation Power Source Load

Basic Electrical Circuit: Alternating Current :

Basic Electrical Circuit: Alternating Current Intelligent Motor Control for Automated Lifestyles A C Wiring Considerations Must be installed by licensed electrician Must use 4-conductor (3 wires plus ground ) 12-14 AWG Good for long distances
