Premium member Presentation Transcript Development of Nursing Leadership/ Management Skills Using Simulation : Development of Nursing Leadership/ Management Skills Using Simulation Janice Ankenmann RN MSN CCRN FNP Napa Valley College 2007 Slide 2: “ … in any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing to do is the wrong thing, and the worst things you can do is nothing.” Theodore Roosevelt Napa Valley College : Napa Valley College Wine Country Simulation Center : Wine Country Simulation Center Leadership Objectives : Leadership Objectives Time Management Priority Setting Appropriate Delegation Skills Clear, concise communications skills Demonstration of understanding of multiple disease processes and the safe nursing care appropriate for those patients * inclusive of assessment skills, interventions, recognition of life threatening emergencies Scenarios : Scenarios I chose four patient scenarios from the METI repertoire and altered them to meet my students needs 62 yo man with Crohn’s…ready for discharge after the central line gets discontinued by the MD 83 yo female s/p right THR two days ago who is HOH, has cataracts, is confused 76 year old female three days post op gastrectomy for CA who is depressed 26 year old female with asthma exacerbation who is non-compliant with meds at home and needs teaching prior to discharge Assignments : Assignments Prep assignment prior to arrival Allows students opportunity to review disease processes , medications, procedures Allows students opportunity to review practice acts and appropriate assignments for all roles Refresh SIM lab expectations Professional look and behaviors “What happens in SIM lab, stays in Sim lab” Learning opportunity, not a testing situation Re-look at environment, mannequins Slide 8: Roles: RN, LVN, CNA And, as appropriate, the Crohn’s patient and wife either assigned or allowed to volunteer Faculty play roles of off- going nurse giving report, MD, other patients, code team…. Wear name tags to prevent confusion Role playing and student action “as if in real life” are expected Set up scenario : Set up scenario Off going nurse gives RN shift report RN is to delegate/ give report as needed to his/her team Every role has notes as to how to behave LVN is new to acute care, is in RN program at local college and feels overwhelmed…. CNA is worked here for 20 years and is tired. Retiring in three months. Does not like these young nurses telling her what to do (and has attitude), but patients love her…..
