Forthill focus The Forthill Primary Newsletter - Spring 2007 Forthill focus Forthill focus Forthill focus Forthill focus Forthill P.3a ASSEMBLY We had our Assembly on 9 February 2007. We did a Scottish Ceilidh. We performed songs, poems and dances. My favourite song was “3 Craws sat Upon a Wall”. I enjoyed the Scottish country dancing best of all. By Alex Our topic was about ‘Katie Morag’ and the Isle of Struay. In one of the stories Katie goes to a ceilidh, so we decided to have a ceilidh for our assembly. It was great fun. I enjoyed saying the poem “The Crocodile”. By Michael In February our class had a Scottish Ceilidh as our assembly. Our group said “The Snawman” and then everyone clapped. After this we sang “The World is Coming to an End”. We enjoyed our assembly very much. By Firaz and Jamie P.3b ASSEMBLY We decided that our assembly would be about ‘pets’. Friday 9 March was our date and we didn’t have very long to prepare it! Firstly it was all hands on deck to paint huge pictures of our favourite pets so that we could decorate the curtains in the hall. We spoke about all the ways people should care for the different types of pets and we each wrote a funny little bit about a pet animal we know. Songs and poems were learned and everyone practised the piece they were going to do. We had a search at home to find as many cuddly pets as we could find to lay along the front of the stage – they look really cute! On the day there were lots of mums, dads, grannies and grandads who came to watch us perform. We hope that they and the other classes enjoyed our assembly. We all had great fun putting it together. From the Children of P.3b CHINESE NEW YEAR This term we have been learning about the Chinese New Year. ‘Kung Hay Fat Choi’ means Happy New Year and 2007 is the year of the pig. Here are all the years in the Chinese New Year – rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster and dog. We made origami pigs. In technology we are all designing and making a Chinese lantern. By Stephen, Lauren and Clare P.4c PICTURE BOOK AWARD This term P.6b and P.1c have been participating in the Picture Book Award venture. The children from P.6b read four picture books to the P.1s. The books were “I’m Special I’m Me”, “Dig the Dog”, “Traction Man” and “Dan Diesel”. Both classes then had to vote for their favourite book. P.6b chose “I’m Special I’m Me” while the children of P.1c voted for “Traction Man” as their favourite. A display by both classes will be on view in Broughty Ferry Library during the Easter holidays. By Carissa & Niamh P.6b RED NOSE DAY This year all the P.4s have been organising enterprises to help raise money and save lives! One of the ideas is to ‘bling up your nose’’ which means you decorate your red nose. Another idea was to sell special word searches which were priced at 20p and they had red nose related words to find. These were very popular as they sold out! Another great idea was to design a t-shirt for Comic Relief and bring your design into school and donate 20p to enter. These were all great ideas! I think that they will raise a lot of money for Comic Relief. By Martha P.6a PIZZA EXPRESS On Tuesday 13 March, P.5b went to Pizza Express. Firstly, we learned how to knead the dough, then how to make the crust of the pizza. We used our palm to flatten the dough and put oil in the pan and put the dough in it. We put on tomato puree and moved it from side to side to cover the pizza base. It was quite hard because your couldn’t let the puree get on to the crust of the pizza or it would burn. Then we put on our toppings. We had a selection of: pepperoni, ham, olives, peppers and onions. John, from Pizza Express, put them in the oven. They were delicious! By Hannah and Amy P.5b BALGAY ROAD RELAY The Dundee Schools Road Relay at Balgay Park took place on Wednesday 28 March. The sun was shining on the athletes and the excitement could be felt from the school! The girls Suzanne Thomson, Danielle Parsons and Nicola Goldmann ran and ran and ran, and were presented with the silver medal place. The boys’ race was equally as exciting and our boys Ryan Winter, Michael Robertson and Keith Mitchell acquitted themselves exceptionally well and finished 5th. Well Done to all our athletes. REMINDER The School is closed on 3 May 2007 for the Scottish Election.

It was a most enjoyable event and the standard of the singing was very high. This year’s winner is Nicola Goldmann and we all want to congratulate her on her fine win. Well done to everyone who made it such an exciting competition. P.6b FUNDRAISING P.6b has decided to raise money for the RNLI and the World Wildlife Fund. We decided to raise the money for these charities because we had so much fun doing it last year. The reason we chose the World Wildlife Fund was because we were doing a project about endangered animals and we thought they needed the money. The reason we decided to give the other half of the money to the RNLI is that we attended a fundraising event for the RNLI and found out that they needed 10 million pounds to finance new boats and equipment. We have been thinking about the activities we would like to do to raise the money and our ideas are: a fancy dress obstacle course, a toy fair and some other little competitions. Our target is £1,000 and we will split the money between the RNLI and the WWF. We recently held our Toy Fair which was very successful. The total raised so far is £425.75. Thank you everyone for entering our competition (Guess the Teddy Bear’s Birthday). The winning date was 28 September and the winner was Ismail Karim, P.6b. We are delighted to tell you we raised £51.41 for our two charities. By Amy, Ailsa and Gemma P.6b P.7 VISIT TO THE SHORE On Monday 22 January some pupils from P.7a joined children from other schools and went to the Shore. When we arrived we were put into groups and taken to do different activities. The four activities were: cooking, filming, relationships and art. During the cooking session we made chapattis. We spread butter, jam and marmalade on them. We then made sweet chapattis, filled with sugar. They were very tasty. We also learned about different spices. At the filming activity we were all given different jobs: some people were actors, others were camera or sound crew. The rest were either vision mixers or audio mixers. We were filming an Indian version of “Grease”. We all found this activity very enjoyable. It was lunchtime. There was a choice of vegetable or chicken soup and either ham or cheese sandwiches. We were all given a yoghurt, fruit and a glass of juice. The next activity was relationships. We were all given a balloon with a question inside. Our task was to blow up the balloon, attach it to our leg with string and then try and burst other people’s balloons. We read out our question and gave an answer. Our last activity was art. We had a piece of felt which we had to decorate with finger paint, glitter and pieces of felt. They were supposed to look like Indian welcoming signs. Throughout the day pupils from Grove had been telling us about Grove and answering any questions we had. We all said a big thank you to all the people who had helped make our day so enjoyable. We had a very enjoyable day and it was great fun.
