“All war is an example of failed diplomacy” ~ Tony Benn

Slide 2:

Maaliintti Rangers : When Diplomacy fails, a Campaign begins, Somalia, 1991-1993 الذين سقطوا لن تكون منسية

Slide 3:

In 1991, following the Somali Civil War, the country of Somalia is corrupt and unstable, crime runs rapid, citizens starve, and are threatened by malnutrition related diseases. Many people die each day, whether it be from starvation or violence…

Slide 4:

Soon after, the United Nations responds by sending diplomatic aid to the Somali city of Mogadishu, also proceeding to establish humanitarian relief throughout the country, by setting up supply centers and food distribution outposts, these efforts became the UN Operations in Somalia or UNOSOM…

Slide 5:

By 1992, over 300,000 Somali citizens have died, and 1,000,000 more evacuate Somalia as refugees, and violence erupts due to civil strife, causing the UN Security Council to debate with Somali Militias to create a ceasefire, with an agreement, the UN dispatches 50 troops to monitor the ceasefire…

Slide 6:

The soldiers' presence is disregarded, and conflict continues, Somali General Mohamed Farrah Aidid urges the current president Ali Mahdi Muhammad to remove the UN peacekeepers, conditions worsen, groups separate and fight, food distribution corrupts when parties prevent others from receiving needed food and supplies…

Slide 7:

In late 1992, UN troops are attacked, relief imports are at risk of being robbed or stolen, ships are prevented from docking, and by now General Aidid has gained enough power to put himself in charge, he dismisses the UN and warns that any UN member or peacekeeper that does not leave, will be killed…

Slide 8:

Following Aidid’s threat, U.S President George H. W. Bush sees that the UN does not wish leave, so he offers to establish a multi-national military force, known as United Task Force or UNITAF, UNITAF’s goal soon becomes UNOSOM II…

Slide 9:

By early 1993, U.S troops arrive on the shores of Somalia, they were met by the media and the journalists waiting for them, a new factor in war, every footstep, every shot is reported, the commanders focus on the task at hand, they divide the mission into four phases, first is ,deployment to hostile areas, second, expand the Somali security zone, so that UN could aid more easily, then take the Somali cities Kasmayo and Bardera for easier land routes, and finally, the last task was to give the UN complete control once more

Slide 10:

Around June 5th 1993, Pakistan sends soldiers to begin an investigation on Mohamed Farrah Aidid and the firearms that his forces have received, the troops are met by an angry Somali mob, while being driven back, but in the meantime also trying to contain the chaos, Aidid’s forces attack a UN Food Center, declaring it a deliberate draw, the U.S dispatches a Quick Response Tac-Team, 56 UNITAF/UNOSOM soldiers die, the captured Pakistani corpses are publicly displayed…

Slide 11:

Subsequently, U.S Admiral Jonathan Howe issues a $25,000 reward for intelligence about Aidid, so that the U.S Military could bring him to justice for his war crimes, including recruitment of children for militias engagement continues between the U.S Troops and Aidid’s forces, this results in civilian death, which converts some UN supporters to Aidid supporters, adding insult, four western journalists are murdered by a mob

Slide 12:

In late 1993, the U.S Army composes a mission to capture lieutenants of Aidid in the hope to gain information and possibly weaken his command, this involves a frontal assault in the heart of Mogadishu, which would be lead in by a special unit known as Delta Force and supported by four chalks or squads of Army Rangers, the Rangers would descend on Mogadishu by rope from a Blackhawk Helicopter, the Blackhawks would provide air support, in the meantime Delta Force would capture the hostages and load them onto to Humvees, and they’d all go back to base in ninety minutes, but an unexpected shift in momentum will occur… Copyright ©2001, Revolution Studios, Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Scott Free Productions

Slide 13:

Towards the finalization of the protocol mission, a Blackhawk helicopter is downed by an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) in the middle of Mogadishu, with an oncoming mob, the Rangers rush to rescue the survivors, when another Blackhawk is shot down farther away, with a second mob approaching, with no reinforcements nearby, the lives of pilot Michael Durant and his fellow surviving crewmates lie in the hands of two Delta Force snipers Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart…

Slide 14:

Gordon and Shughart have been providing aerial support throughout the mission, their request to deploy to the crash site has been denied several times, finally they are granted permission and the Blackhawk Super Six Two lands ,then Gordon and Shughart are barely off when the helicopter takes off and they are alone, they reach the crash site where they find Durant and a few other crew members seriously injured, they do what they can medically, before facing the approaching mob, equipped with only sniper rifles and pistols, Gordon and Shughart spend their final minutes, killing an uncounted number of hostiles before being over-whelmed and beaten to death, Durant is the only survivor and is taken prisoner…

Slide 15:

A month after the Battle of Mogadishu, the world watches in horror as videos show celebrating Somalis dragging corpses of dead Rangers through the streets, the bodies were beaten and mutilated, U.S President William “Bill” Clinton orders the immediate withdrawal of all U.S Military personal from Somalia, US Diplomat to East Africa, Robert Oakley negotiates the return of the bodies to the US Government, eventually all are returned, all in horrible condition, by spring 1994, all U.S personal have withdrawn and UNITAF and UNOSOM II have ended…
