REMEMBER THE MAINE!! To HELL with Spain!!!!!!

Do Now What is the poster trying to convince you to do? Why does the poster suggest you should support America in Iraq? Who does the poster suggest is responsible for September 11th?

Notes 1. In 1898, Cuban rebels were fighting for their independence from Spain.

Notes 2. Many people believed that America should get involved because: A. economic reasons (sugar!) B. to spread out military and spread democracy C. yellow journalists turned them against the Spanish

Notes 3. To “protect Americans” in Cuba, President William McKinley sent the U.S.S. Maine, a Navy warship, to the waters outside Cuba I really didn’t get involved with this…but the newspapers are saying Americans are in danger down there!

Notes 4. On February 15, 1898, the U.S.S Maine mysteriously blew up in Cuba’s Havana Harbor.

Notes 6. Soon, Americans all over the country were chanting the following slogan: To Hell with Spain, Remember the Maine! 7. The bombing of the U.S.S Maine led the United States to the start of the Spanish-American War.

The USS Maine Memorial in Manhattan (in Columbus Circle, at the corner of Central Park) was built in memory of those who died on the ship that day.
