Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease that affects the airways. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. Asthma is caused by environmental and genetic factors. These factors influence the severity of the disease in an individual, and the medication that must be used for treatment. Low air quality, from high pollutant levels or high ozone levels, may be associated with asthma development. Asthma symptoms can be exacerbated by exercise, mould, smoke (from tobacco, other), pollen, changes in weather, air-born chemicals or dust, strong emotional expressions (laughing hard, crying). Why is Asthma so Prevalent? : Why is Asthma so Prevalent? An individual can develop asthma due to their genetic inheritance. According to one study, there are over 100 genes associated with the disease. However, many experts believe that although an individual might inherit specific genes that cause asthma, the environment in which this person is exposed is the true instigator of the disease. Asthma sufferers tend to relate the exacerbated symptoms to the environmental conditions they are exposed to at the time, especially pollutant levels. Are Asthma Rates Rising?: Are Asthma Rates Rising?
