EXPERIENTIAL APPROACH IN ENHANCING SKILLS OFSTUDENT TEACHERS EXPERIENTIAL APPROACH : EXPERIENTIAL APPROACH The process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of the experience of the learner who is at the centre of the learning process (Kolb,1984). TRADITIONAL APPROACH : TRADITIONAL APPROACH Depends on external discipline Depends on learning from texts and teachers Ensures acquisition of isolated skills and techniques by dull and rote learning Functions on the basis of static aims and materials Prepares for a remote future (Dewey) EXPERIENTIAL APPROACH : EXPERIENTIAL APPROACH Cultivates and expresses individuality Encourages free activity and learning from experience Views the acquisition of skills as a means of attaining desired ends Makes the most of the opportunities of the present Comes to terms with and embrace a changing world STEPS IN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING(COLEMAN,1976) : STEPS IN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING(COLEMAN,1976) Action and effects of action Understanding these in the particular instance Understanding that the general principles governing the particular instance may require further testing action Application through action in new circumstances within the range of the generalization STEPS IN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING(KOLB,1984) : STEPS IN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING(KOLB,1984) Concrete experience Reflective observation Abstract conceptualisation Active experimentation How to plan a training course? : How to plan a training course? Practice should be the focus of the training Informal interactions with the trainees Arrange group sessions for analysis and reflection Practice followed by theory will be effective Arrange group discussions to analyze practice sessions HOW TO PROMOTE EXPERIENTIAL APPROACH? : HOW TO PROMOTE EXPERIENTIAL APPROACH? BRAIN STORMING ROLE PLAY CASE STUDIES SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION BRAIN STORMING : BRAIN STORMING STRENGTHS: listening exercise that allows creative thinking for new ideas encourages full participation because all ideas equally recorded draws on group's knowledge and experience spirit of congeniality is created one idea can spark off other ideas Helps to find out what participants know already and what participants want Form basis for problem solving and facilitates the sharing of feelings Slide 10: LIMITATIONS: can raise too many issues to have a focused discussion - discussion may not have full participation - only as effective as following discussion PREPARATION: - need to set up equipment - effective only if facilitator prepares questions to discuss after the show CASE STUDIES : CASE STUDIES STRENGTHS: develops analytic, problem solving, decision making, information gathering and co-operative working skills allows for exploration of solutions for complex issues allows student to apply new knowledge and skills Slide 12: LIMITATIONS: people may not see relevance to own situation insufficient information can lead to inappropriate results PREPARATION: case must be clearly defined in some cases case study must be prepared ROLE PLAYING : ROLE PLAYING STRENGTHS: introduces problem situation dramatically provides opportunity for people to assume roles of others and thus appreciate another point of view allows for exploration of solutions provides opportunity to practice skills Slide 14: LIMITATION people may be too self-conscious - not appropriate for large groups - people may feel threatened PREPARATION: - trainer has to define problem situation and roles clearly - trainer must give very clear instructions SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION : SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION STRENGTHS; allows participation of everyone people often more comfortable in small groups can reach group consensus Slide 16: LIMITATIONS: needs careful thought as to purpose of group groups may get side tracked PREPARATION: needs to prepare specific tasks or questions for group to answer There are many other methods too! : There are many other methods too!
