Objectives : Objectives After this session you will be able to: Define and elaborate the term non-verbal communication. Understand the significance of non-verbal communication in organizations. Discuss the two major forms of non-verbal communication. Elaborate the various types of non-verbal cues. Understand the interpretation of non-verbal messages. Discuss the tips for effective use of non-verbal means. DEFINITIONS : DEFINITIONS It is communication through any means other than words It is the transmission of messages by some medium other than speech or writing It refers to all external stimuli other than the spoken or written words and that includes body motion, characteristics of voice, appearance and space distancing It is the communication that uses non-linguistic means to convey the message It refers to the transfer of meaning by body language, space ,time, paralanguage. Forms of non-verbal communication : Forms of non-verbal communication Conscious non-verbal communication . Subliminal non-verbal communication . Conscious non-verbal communication : Conscious non-verbal communication Senders are aware that they are aware that they are sending a message and are aware of the general receivers too are aware of meaning. A hug , A Shake hand , A Smile. Subliminal non-verbal communication : Subliminal non-verbal communication Subliminal communication addressed to the subconscious mind of receiver may not be conscious aware Gut feelings relate to subconscious reading Uniform of judges , police subliminally communicate authority. Well dressed person conveys success a credibly Poor dressing – lack of credibility. Young ,beautiful people in ads. Goals : Goals A general non-verbal communication helps in achieving many goals. To create impressions. To manage interactions. Expressing emotions. To send relational messages. To convey deception. TYPES OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION : TYPES OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION Posture : Posture The whole body is used Slumped low goals Erect high spirit, confidence energy Lean forward open & interested Lean away defensive & disinterested Uncrossed arms open willingness to learn Oculesics : Oculesics GUIDELINES ON EYE CONTACT : GUIDELINES ON EYE CONTACT If you have trouble staring someone in the eye, look at something else on their face When speaking to a group look at everyone Look at people who are the key decision makers or hold power Look at reactive listeners Do not look at the floor, scripts or anything that causes you tilt your head away from the receiver Do not look at bad listeners who may distract you TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION : TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION Observe and understand the non-verbal signals being sent your way on a moment to moment basis Use good eye contact Stop what you were doing when your listeners look glassy eyed or bored Use the tone of your voice the way a musician uses an instrument Adopt the most appropriate posture that suits the occasion Express gratitude to your audience when they are being attentive and responsive CONTD…… : CONTD…… Soak in the pats/hugs that others give you When you are confronting someone who you are in a close relationship with, reach out to take his hand in both of yours Understand the cultural nuances of the various forms of non-verbal communication When there is a contradiction between the verbal and non-verbal messages of a person you are listening to, try to access the situation with the help of non-verbal cues You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
