I am Alyssa Streicher, and I am 12 years old. Recently I have been thinking… Hey, you're 12. That means, you're going to start driving in about 2 ½ years, and you know you're going to beg your parents for a car. So why not start saving up for one? I have been figuring out what it’s going to take for me to earn enough money to get my car. Finding my Car : Finding my Car When I talked to my parents about my plan, they said that they would help me pay for the car, as long as it is reasonably priced. They both know how much I wanted a little red car, so I began researching. Since my parents know more about buying cars than I do, I asked my dad what brand I should start with. He said Toyota was a good brand for me, since it was my first car. I found a great car online – A used 2009 Corolla for $15,987. Earning some money : Earning some money Well for a start, I babysit Kaitlyn (the 2-year-old that lives across the Street) 3 times a week, earning $5 per hour. I usually babysit her for 3 hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Every week I earn $45 babysitting her. I know there are 52 weeks in a year and I’ll be getting my car when I turn 16, so I have about 3 years and 3 months left until I’ll get my car. I would multiply 52 X 3 = 156 (To figure out how many weeks are in 3 years), then take 156 and multiply it by $45 to get $7,020. Now all that I have left to figure out is the amount of money the other 3 months would be. There are four weeks in a month and I earn $45 every week, so that would be $180 per month. $180 X 3 = $540, Then you add that to 7,020 and would earn about $7,560. Not enough for the car I planned on getting. I’ll Have to save up a little more… hmm… My Other Options : My Other Options My parents finally decided on how much they would give me: $5,000. If I added $5,000 to my previous $7,695, I would get $12,695. I would still need about $3,292 more, though. I could also earn some more money by Babysitting Mr. & Mrs. McGordan’s Girls, Bea and Bailey. And what about That job Mrs. Deluise offered? I could take her up on that. Let’s Figure it out Again.. : Let’s Figure it out Again.. Okay, so my total money for babysitting Kaitlyn is $7,155. That means I would need $8,832 more. But, I Have to remember that my parents will give me $5,000, Meaning I really only need $3,832! I usually babysit the McGordon’s kids about once a month for 5 hours, earning $5 per hour. That means in 3 years and 3 months I will have earned… $975 .Because I take 5 hrs and multiply it by $5 dollars = $25 (Which is the amount of money I’ll earn every month). Then multiply that by how many months are in 3 Years and 3 Months.. $25 X 39 = $975. Hmm.. I would still need $2,317. What else I need to earn : What else I need to earn Right now I need $2,317 more dollars. Let’s see... If I made that into an Algebra problem, it might help me find The answer: $2,317 ÷ 5 = x (X= # of hours needed to babysit) Lets figure it out: $2,317 ÷ 5 = 463.4 (463.4= # of hours needed to babysit) So, I need to babysit for an additional 464 hours. Slide 8: And that’s how Math puts the action in my passion . . . Towards getting a car! You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
