This is where one uses action to achieve a change whether it is social, economic, political, or environmental change Activism is actually doing something to produce change- not just complaining or learning about how something needs to be changed What is Girls on the Run? : What is Girls on the Run? a non-profit organization aimed at pre-teen girls (ages 8-13 years) Mission: “To educate and prepare girls for a life time of self-respect and healthy living” They teach this through training for a 5k (3.1 mi) race that they hold twice a year A program to help young girls make good decisions and avoid high risk activities such as: substance/alcohol use, eating disorders, early sexual activity, non-active lifestyles, depression, suicide attempts, and confrontations with the juvenile justice system How did I help? : How did I help? In October, I helped out at a practice 5k race that the girls ran to get ready for the big 5k race December 5, I helped out at the actual 5k race Before the race: I blew up balloons that were hung at the finish line I did the girls’ hair by spray painting it and putting it up I face painted the girls’ faces During the race: I directed traffic I cheered for the girls as they ran by I held up signs that encouraged the girls to keep going! Girls on the Run : Girls on the Run How effective was my Activism project? : How effective was my Activism project? How did I change these young girls’ lives? I believe just by being there and supporting them meant a lot Seeing the smiles on the young girls’ faces was very touching, and I could tell that they really appreciated me being there I showed that I agreed with the things they have been taught in this program through out the months of training just by being there and showing my support There was this one girl who starting walking where I was cheering the girls on. I smiled at her and told her that she was doing a great job and to keep up the hard work. She then smiled back and began running again! I felt so happy after that moment. goals : goals What was my goal for this activism project and did I accomplish it? My goal was to cheer these girls on and help them realize that they are wonderful young ladies who should have self respect My goal was to not only argue that females need to love themselves but to do something about it Yes, I believe I accomplished my goal because I could just tell by looking in the girls’ eyes that they were happy and this was really changing their life for the long run I, however, wish I could volunteer more with Girls on the Run and get to know the girls better Slide 8: Having poster signs to encourage the girls Being able to work with girls on two things that I am very passionate about Self acceptance and respect Running The race being held in the fall time (although I did not really have a say in the day) I could have told more people about this event (there were ten of my friends there) What did I like or would do the same with my project? What could I have done better or different with my project? Works Cited : Works Cited http://www.girlsontherun.org/theprogram.html You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
