Slide 1:Maths Information for Parents. June 26th 2007

Slide 2:Ensuring parents are aware of: methods used in school, in order to support the child at home assessment levels and expectations for each year group the importance of homework Aims of the session:

Slide 3:Methods of Calculation. Early counting Number lines Addition and subtraction Multiplication and division

Slide 4:Progression in Calculation. Partitioning and vertical addition Compact method of addition Subtraction by decomposition Multiplication using the grid method Division by chunking

Slide 5:Assessment Levels and Expectations for each Year Group.

Slide 6:Foundation Stage Profile: mathematical development. Average score 6 Year 1: 1A Year 2: 2B

Slide 7:How do the levels work at the End of Key Stage 1? Working towards Level 1 Level 1 Level 2C Below average Level 2B National average for a Year 2 child Level 2A Above average Level 3

Slide 8:Progress from End of Key Stage 1 to End of Key Stage 2: Two whole levels = 6 sublevels (C, B, A) Therefore target each child for two sublevel progress each year.

Slide 9:How do the levels work at the End of Key Stage 2? Level 4C Below average Level 4B National average for a Year 6 child Level 4A Above average Level 5

Slide 10:Maths Assessment at End of Key Stage 1. There will be a task for children operating below level 2 Children operating at level 2 will be given a maths test. Children who achieve a 2A on the level 2 test will take the level 3 test, if the teacher assesses this as appropriate. Help can be given with reading the questions.

Slide 11:Maths Assessment. Beginning of the school year targets are set for each child All children are teacher assessed every half term Targets reviewed, raised if appropriate End of year tests.

Slide 12:Correct number formation.

Slide 13:How can you help your child with maths? Make sure your child knows their 2, 5 and 10 times tables – also relate this to division. Practise number bonds A key part of every numeracy session in school is mental maths, so practise at home. Children must get used to solving problems in their heads, rather than resorting to a calculator.

Slide 14:Think about time. Look at clocks, both digital and analogue. Estimate how long a certain activity will take to do and see if you are right! Work out how long it is until the next mealtime. Play games: how long is a minute, starting from now?

Slide 15:Talk about pocket money with your child. Help her to add it up week by week, and work out whether she can afford a particular toy or treat. Shop using money and calculate change.

Slide 16:Practical maths activities: Cooking Shopping Measuring – length, capacity, weighing Estimating

Slide 17:As child progresses continually reinforce maths concepts. Support with homework. Apply mathematical learning to real-life situations.
