Premium member Presentation Transcript Social care value based activities : Social care value based activities Background to course Aims of Course : Aims of Course To promote social integration and participation through social contact behaviour and self selection of daily activities Through greater social activity, keep as active and engaged for as long as possible To foster and maintain a good quality of life by promoting enjoyment through a variety of activities To facilitate the learning needs of older people by allowing them to construct personal meaning from individual and shared activities in a comfortable and supportive learning environment Education has little to do with explanation and everything to do with engagement. Papert(1980) Activity programs challenge various aspects of the learning process for participants for example Self actualization Self affirmation Choice Group work Critical thinking Creativity Empowerment Global learning Selection of course participants : Selection of course participants Experience of working with older people Greater Dublin area Private / public sector A mix of nurses, care assistants, day care organisers, volunteers Course objectives : Course objectives Recognise the social, psychological and spiritual needs of older people in day and residential care centres Understand and apply the principles of social care to the lives of older people Reflect on own work practices and on the care environment Develop and facilitate social leisure and developmental activities and programmes in their work settings Structure of course : Structure of course Length: Part-time 30 hours Format : workshops, lectures and experiential learning Assessment: Written report evaluating a programme or activity in their care setting Attendance: full attendance is a course requirement Award: DIT Certificate in continuing Professional Development Course content : Course content Principles of professional practice Use of Art, Drama, Music Psychological and social transitions and challenges for older people Activities and crafts Linking theory to professional practice Spirituality Older people and the community Interpersonal communication Physical exercises, movement and multisensorial approaches Learning in Care Settings : A good life in old age is possible for older people regardless of physical and mental incapacities People flourish when they are connected within their communities View older people as unique individuals with a repository of life experiences and capable of continuing learning and social influence in their communities.
