Procrastination is when a person puts a task off until another day or time; delay in action. The fact that you may procrastinate does not mean you are lazy or inefficient, it is not permanent. : Procrastination occurs in the Prefrontal Cortex of the Frontal Lobe. Why people procrastinate : Why people procrastinate Fear of failure: some may think that the project they are working on won’t be good enough so they avoid working on it. Laziness: People keep telling themselves that they will do It the next day, and that day leads to another day. People aren’t interested in the homework: If a person finds the subject boring they will most likely wait until the last minute to complete the homework. People may be too busy: Some may have jobs, school, kids, etc to take care of. Behavioral Procrastination vs. Decisional Procrastination : Behavioral Procrastination vs. Decisional Procrastination Behavioral Procrastination Is related to self-handicap. Self-handicap is defined as a blame shifter. An example would be a student doing poorly on homework and using procrastination as an excuse instead of his laziness to do the homework. Decisional Procrastination Postponing a decision when dealing with other troubles that may be going on. This procrastination is dealing with more of the perfectionism is making decisions. Continued : Continued Decisional Behavioral How to avoid procrastination : How to avoid procrastination Create a productive environment: Turn off the T.V., stereo and cell phone; take away any disturbances. If you live in the dorm room and your roommate is being noisy, take yourself out of the equation and go out in the hallway, library, or study room in the dorm. Continued… : Continued… Break your assignment down into separate parts: Work on the assignment a little bit each day so you can complete the assignment on an ideal time. Ask for help: If you are stuck on a certain part of the task you are doing, ask a teacher, family member for some advice on how to get started. Have a positive attitude: Even if the task is for a subject that may not appeal to you, go into it with a positive attitude so you work hard and make the best of it. Positive attitude = positive grade. Challenge your myths : Challenge your myths “I can’t focus with all this clutter on my desk.” There are no set conditions to write a paper or complete homework. “I don’t have enough research done for my project.” More than likely you have enough research for the project you are working on, you just don’t want to start the actual project so you keep wasting time looking for unneeded research. “I do my best work under pressure.” Actually the more stressed or behind you are in a subject you are more likely to throw random facts that may not make sense or rambling on about things that don’t relate to subject you are doing. Facts about procrastination : Facts about procrastination Research has shown that 70% of college students procrastinate on their school work. It is thought that procrastination is related to low- self confidence, high social anxiety and depression. Procrastination involves behavioral, cognitive, and affective components. The amount of procrastination increases from Freshman year to Senior year. Procrastination does effect students grades in a negative way.
