Slide 1:

Global Issues due to Overpopulation

Slide 2:

"Go Forth And Multiply!" That's what the human population has successfully been doing for thousands and thousands of years, expanding, exploring, migrating, conquering, utilizing, evolving, civilizing, industrializing, and now, destroying the very land upon which we live.

Slide 3:

According to projections, the world population will continue to grow until at least 2050, with the population reaching 9 billion in 2040, World population stood at roughly 6.7 billion.

Slide 4:

Wars to be fought in the future will continue to be over natural resources. Humans everywhere must understand that rapid population growth damages the Earth's resources and diminishes human well-being." Shortage of Resources

Slide 5:

Shortage of Fresh water Fresh water supplies are running low worldwide. Declining water supplies is having disastrous consequences for agriculture. People lack drinking water “More than one out of six people lack access to safe drinking water” : WHO

Slide 6:

Shortage of Food "Current estimates indicate that we will not have enough water to feed ourselves in 25 years time, by when the current food crisis may turn into a perpetual crisis." Now is the time to begin storing up food.  Because a food shortage that is so horrible that most of us cannot even imagine it is on the way, and when it hits it is going to be incredibly painful.

Slide 7:

An estimated 5 million to 7 million hectares of farming land disappear each year , taken out of production because of accelerating land degradation and rapid urbanization. Shortage of Land Usable land may become less useful through salinization, deforestation, desertification, erosion, and urban sprawl..

Slide 8:

“World will shortly come to an end of fossil fuels- the world's primary energy resource.” Shortage of Fossil Fuels 80% of the world's commercial energy comes from non-renewable fossil fuels and there is no replacement to these resources.

Slide 9:

About 850 million people are malnourished and about 20,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations. The proportion of the world's population living on less than $1 per day has halved in 20 years Poverty and Overpopulation

Slide 10:

Effect on Environment “The world's ecological capacity is simply insufficient to satisfy the ambitions of China, India, Japan, Europe and the United States as well as the aspirations of the rest of the world in a sustainable way” “During a remarkably short period of time, we have lost a quarter of the world's topsoil and a fifth of its agricultural land, altered the composition of the atmosphere profoundly, and destroyed a major proportion of our forests and other natural habitats without replacing them. Worst of all, we have driven the rate of biological extinction, the permanent loss of species, up several hundred times beyond its historical levels, and are threatened with the loss of a majority of all species by the end of the 21st century”

Slide 11:

Mitigation measures Birth regulations Education and awareness Empowerment

Slide 12:

Birth regulations “Adopting One Child Policy” China, for instance, is well known for instituting a "one child policy" which makes it illegal for urban couples to have more than one child. Using regulations to control population in this manner is often frowned upon, and requires a governing body with supreme authority over its people, but it can be very effective. Another important way to limit population growth is to increase the rate of contraception among the population.

Slide 13:

Education and awareness One option is to focus on education and awareness about overpopulation, family planning, and birth control methods, and to make birth-control devices like male/female condoms, pills and intrauterine devices easily available.

Slide 14:

“Putting women in the workforce” The ability of women to control their own fertility is absolutely fundamental to women’s empowerment and equality Where women’s status is low, family size tends to be large, which makes it more difficult for families to thrive. Empowerment
