SEXUAL COERCION- an act which has direct consequence to the worker’s employment status, of loss of job benefits, as when a supervisor, using his powers over matters such as salary, promotion and training itself attempts to cause a subordinate to grant sexual favors B. SEXUAL ANNOYANCE- act which has no direct relation to job benefits or harm but creates a hostile, intimidating and bothersome work environment. MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OF SH : MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OF SH A. The behavior is unwanted or unwelcome B. The behavior is sexual or related to the sex or gender of the person C. The behavior occurs in context of a relationship where one person has more formal power than the other or more informal power Lip service : Lip service Sexual or gender-related behavior : Sexual or gender-related behavior Sexual innuendos, comments, or bantering Asking or commenting about a person’s sexuality Humor or jokes about sex or females in general Asking for sexual behavior Touching a person, including patting, pinching, stroking, squeezing, hugging or brushing against his or her body Slide 42: Touching or grabbing a person’s breast, crotch, or buttocks Giving a neck or shoulder massage Leering or ogling, such as “elevator eyes”, or staring at a women’s breast or body Spreading rumors about a person’s sexual activities Calling women names such as “hot stuff”, “cutie pie”, “bitch”, “whore” or “slut” Blaming the victim of sexual harassment for having caused it. Sending sexual mail, notes, e-mail, or making sexually explicit phone calls, Sending, giving, showing or displaying sexual materials including pornography, sexual pictures, cartoons and calendars Attempted or actual sexual assault or abuse. 3 categories of SH : 3 categories of SH QUID PRO QUO- something given in exchange of something else MAJOR ELEMENTS OF QUID PRO QUO: A. the sexual advances were unwanted B. the harassment was sexually motivated C. the harassment tangibly affects the target’s work or learning HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT- offensive environment so as to interfere with a person’s ability to work. SEXUAL FAVORITISM- where quid pro quo harassment is involved and where there is widespread favoritism Quid pro quo: : Quid pro quo: Verbal harassment : Verbal harassment A pointblank question of “are you still a virgin?” asked by a male teacher to a coed. Non-sensical questions asked by a male teacher in his social science class, “is there politics in the vagina?”; “what is the relation of penis to power?” Items in a history exam: did Spanish colonization permit masturbation and communal bathing practices?” Verbal harassment : Verbal harassment Remarks after hearing an unsatisfactory recitation of a male student; “if you are not good inside, you must be good outside in other things” (sexual connotation) “how long do you come up?” asked the male teacher to a male freshman. The student replied, “twenty minutes from the dorm to the CAS building.” teacher’s retort: “gago! How long do you ejaculate?” Verbal harassment : Verbal harassment A male teacher assigned his male student to individually report to class the measurement of their penis. In a swimming class, a male P.E. teacher embarrasses a flat-chested female student in bathing suit with a remark; “how come your front looks like an ironing board”? On the first meeting of a class, a male professor was introducing his subject, presenting expectations and class requirement. To illustrate a point, he asked a student, “do you know what masturbation is? Can you show it to the class?” Peer harassment : Peer harassment Shouting obscenities at women as they pass a fraternity house or other place where men gather. Loudly discussing a woman’s sexual attributes and rating her attractiveness, a practice called “scooping” Mooning women, whereby men aggressively expose their buttocks Pulling down women’s shorts or pants. Biting a woman (“sharking”) Threatening rape or other sexual abuse Victim of SH : Victim of SH Physical harassment: “chancing” : Physical harassment: “chancing” In a swimming class, the male instructor touches students in unlikely parts as the buttocks A male teacher in a computer class forcibly kissed female students and touched their private parts while “looking over” their computer work. Freshmen students are made to line up in the nude during their entrance physical examination A female security guard posted at the university entrance gate touches female students’ private parts in the guise of frisking.
