Slide 2: His Road Coloring Theorem gave conditions under which it was possible to give “universal directions.” Slide 3: Carthage math major Michelle Nordrum was intrigued… Slide 4: <video clip> (Michelle outdoors in front of a stone Carthage sign.) “So I got this summer research grant to investigate the Road Coloring Problem.” Slide 5: <video clip> (Michelle outdoors in front of a stone Carthage sign.) “Essentially the theorem tells when it is possible to color a network of one-way roads so that the same directions, given in terms of colors, will route everyone to a common destination regardless of starting points.” Slide 6: <video clip> (Michelle in front of computer projection on a wall. The projection is a graph on 8 vertices with circles moving between the vertices as Michelle calls out the directions. The circles all converge as she finishes.) “For example, we might have a street network between eight places and movement along the streets along colors red – yellow – yellow -- … bringing everyone to the same place.” Slide 7: <video clip> (Michelle indoors in a board room setting (?).) “The problem was that while the Road Coloring Theorem told that a network could be colored this way, there weren’t a lot of specific examples of actual colorings.” Slide 8: <video clip> (Michelle indoors in a board room setting (?).) “My research resulted in several infinite families of specific roadway colorings.” Slide 9: (Screen snapshot of a Facebook event page. Michelle’s voice says…” “So we wanted to let people understand what this was all about and decided to hold a Road Coloring Event.” Slide 10: <video clip> (Michelle walking in the practice football field, speaking about a future event.) “The plan is to build a large map in this field and recruit volunteers who will run around on the map in response to a set of directions.” Slide 11: <video clip> (Michelle is in a field. She comes to a stop and says …) “And hopefully, end up at the same place.” Slide 12: <video clip> (Adam’s out-take about ending up at the same place and Erlan’s comment.) Slide 13: <fast-paced music> <slide show of graph being set-up> <video clip of Josh “planning”> <end with picture/video of final set-up> <somewhere include a .jpg of the 24-vertex graph> Slide 14: <video clip of camera approaching the group of volunteers> Slide 15: <Begin Event video with music.> <breakaway to “Michelle can’t sleep”.> <More Event video> <breakaway to Kyle’s “dizzy” comment as people get in trap> <More Event video> <break away to Roger “I messed up” right before he messes up.> <Finish Event video> Slide 16: <Marie’s “tired” out-take> <Erik’s “confused out-take> <Tyler’s “rewarding” out-take> <Joseph’s “Do it again” out-take> <Possibly end with the last roughly 15 seconds of the Event again, with the Cheer!> Slide 17: <Scrolling Credits to music> <End with link to a Road Coloring site (Wikipedia?)> You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
