A group of people now called the Pilgrims left the Netherlands in September 1620 to find religious freedom. They came to America on the Mayflower.

When the pilgrims arrived in America, they landed on Plymouth Rock.

Life was hard for the Pilgrims in America. The conditions were harsh and cold and they did not know how to grow crops or harvest food.
Slide 5:
An Indian name Samoset came to greet the pilgrims, but there was a language barrier and the next day Samoset came back with an English speaking Indian named Squanto.
Slide 6:
Squanto taught the pilgrims how to hunt and grow food. With Squanto’s help, the pilgrims were able to harvest in October.
Slide 7:
To celebrate their success, the pilgrims had a three day feast and invited Squanto and other Indians. This was the first Thanksgiving.

This celebration after harvest was practiced every year and in 1863 president Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.

Today, Thanksgiving is associated with family, food and football. It is still a time to be thankful for all that we have.
