Kohala :

Kohala Kohala is the oldest of the volcanoes in Hawaii.

Kilauea :

Kilauea Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes.

Mauna Loa :

Mauna Loa Mauna Loa is the largest  volcano on Earth.

Kohala :

Kohala Kohala is the oldest of five volcanoes that make up the island of Hawaii. Kohala is a about a million years old. It’s last eruption was 120,000. Kohala is a shield volcano. It has not erupted since. Close by volcanoes are - Mauna Kea, Kilauea, Kohala, Hualali, they are all close to each other, they are like cousins.

Volcanic Hazards :

Volcanic Hazards There are two types of volcanoes, effusive and explosive. Effusive volcanoes don’t explode, explosive volcanoes do. Some eruptions are highly explosive and produce fine volcanic ash that rises many kilometers into the atmosphere in enormous eruption columns. Explosive activity also causes widespread ash fall, pyroclastic flows, debris avalanches, landslides, pyroclastic surges, and lahars. Aside from that, volcanoes can kill people, animals and destroy property. On the bright side, volcanoes provide fertilizer for plants and soil. Volcanic slopes left after an eruption are very steep, so rare and delicate plants and animals can set up home there and be protected.

Past & Present Activities :

Past & Present Activities Galeras Galeras is one of the most active volcano in Colombia. Its first eruption was about 560,000 years ago. The second time between 40,000 and 150,000 years ago. Its most recent eruption was on January 3, 2010. It forced about 8000 to evacuate. Another eruption was in April,2002. No damage or injury was reported. Another big one was November 2005 it forced about 10,000 to evacuate and caused a lot of property damage.

Past & Present Activities :

Past & Present Activities One of the most recent eruptions of Gaua was February 2010. Ash increased and there was a lot of smoke in the sky. It also caused more than death 4,000 death. Gaua

Slide 10:

Volcanoes affect the Earth's atmosphere by pumping dust and various types of gases into the air when they erupt. While larger dust particles may stay in the lower atmosphere for a few hours or days, they quickly settle out and are removed by rainfall. Smaller dust particles may be blasted up into the dry upper atmosphere (the stratosphere). These particles affect the earth's climate by blocking the sunlight and cooling large areas of the earth. A large number of volcanic eruptions over a short period of time may cool the earth enough to cause real problems. Important gases ejected by erupting volcanoes are water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur compounds like sulfur dioxide. Changes in atmosphere and biosphere

Slide 11:

Volcanic ash consists of powder-size to sand-size particles of igneous rock material that have been blown into the air by an erupting volcano. Ash deposited on the ground after an eruption is known as ashfall deposit. Significant accumulations of ashfall can lead to the immediate destruction of most of the local ecosystem, as well the collapse of roofs on man-made structures. Volcano in Tokyo . Volcanic ash
