There aren’t very many fossils because bats lived on land and they are light boned.

Slide 5:

The biggest bat is the flying fox. It’s wings can be 6 feet wide. It weighs about 3 pounds

Not all bats look alike. :

Not all bats look alike. Some are kind of cute.

Slide 22:

These are kind of weird looking.

Slide 23:

These are faces only their mothers could love.

Up, Up and Away :

Up, Up and Away A bat’s skeleton is a lot like a human skeleton.

Slide 25:

A bats wing is like a human hand. The bones are longer and there is skin between them.

Slide 26:

Hey, I can see the bones in the wings! So can I! Are those claw on the ends of the thumb?

Slide 27:

Some bats have claws and some have suckers to hang onto leaves.

But how does a bat fly? :

But how does a bat fly? They do not glide like a flying squirrel. They can flap their like a bird.

Slide 29:

Just like you make bubbles in water when you swim, a bat makes bubbles in the air that makes it easier for it to fly.

What’s for dinner? :

What’s for dinner? It’s time for dinner. I wonder what I should eat?

Slide 31:

Most bats eat insects. A colony of 300 bats in Texas eats 500,000 pounds of mosquitoes every night. Come to my house. I have some mosquitoes you can eat.

Slide 32:

Some bats eat fruit. They help to spread seeds and help to replant the rain forest.

Slide 33:

Some bats eat nectar. These bats get pollen on their fur and help spread it to other plants so seed will grow.

Slide 34:

This nectar eater has the longest tongue compared to the size of its body of any mammal on earth. Wow! Its tongue is longer than its body.

Slide 35:

Some bats eat lizards, frogs, birds, mice and other bats.

Slide 36:

And some bats drink blood. Are vampires real?

Vampires are not real but Vampire Bats are. :

Vampires are not real but Vampire Bats are. They only eat the blood of animals not humans. They cut the animal with their front teeth but don’t bite it. They don’t suck blood they lick it.

Everyone loves a baby. :

Everyone loves a baby. Aww. Aren’t they cute.

Slide 39:

Mothers usually only have one baby. They feed their babies with milk until they can eat. Then they catch food and bring it to them like a bird or the baby hangs on to them when they fly. They can tell their baby by the sound it makes and its smell. If the mother dies, another mother will adopt the baby.

Different bats raise their babies in different places. :

Different bats raise their babies in different places. They raise their babies in: Caves Trees or under tree bark Buildings or under bridges Chewed leaves made into tents Cacti or bamboo Spider webs Man made shelters

Slide 41:

Bats are important to us. They help us with our environment. They eat many insects and spread seeds. But . .

Slide 42:

Caution If you see a bat, never touch it. It could be sick. Myth Bats will not get stuck in your hair. If you are outside and mosquitoes are nearby a bat may dive in your directions. It doesn’t like you and doesn’t want to be close to you either. So don’t be afraid.
