Slide 32:

When Jesus chose one passage to describe his mission and ministry, he picked up the scroll of Isaiah and read from Isaiah 61: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.  …ctd

Slide 33:

…ctd He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners…to comfort all who mourn and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair…”

Slide 34:

The church today needs a paradigm shift

Slide 35:

We need to catch the imagination of the whole church not just a few. [Wake Up!]

Slide 36:

We need to be relevant to the challenges of missions

Slide 37:

We need to change the thinking of what mission is!

Slide 38:

We need to change our definition of how a follower of Christ should look like!

Slide 39:

We need to change our ideas of where Christians can meet for worship and fellowship!

Slide 40:

We need to identify followers of Christ in many areas and walks of life

Slide 41:

We need to change the thinking of who the missionaries are!

Four Paradigm Shifts- How can we be salt & light?

Slide 56:

you are the salt of the earth you are the light of the world

Slide 57:

In the world & yet not of the world So other worldly that we are of no earthly use Our intimacy with God should lead us to involvement with the world

3) From measuring attendance to measuring impact. :

3) From measuring attendance to measuring impact.

Slide 59:

we are church wherever we are …

Slide 60:

How should a Christian be different and make a difference as a student? a father? a mother? …a member of the armed forces? a politician? …the CEO of a Christian agency? a CEO in a multinational corporation? an athlete? an entertainer? an unskilled worker me? a pastor?

Slide 61:

in Thessalonica Acts 17:6 ‘these that have turned the world upside down’

Slide 62:

turning the church inside out to turn the world downside up

Slide 64:

Ministry is always what happens outside the church- "If you are not making an impact outside of your four walls, then you are not making an impact at all."  Would the community weep if your church were to pull out of the city?  Would anybody notice if you left? Would anybody care?

Slide 65:

The question, “How big is your church?” should be replaced with “How big is the impact you are having on your community?”

4) From encouraging the saints to attend the service to equipping the saints for works of service :

4) From encouraging the saints to attend the service to equipping the saints for works of service

Slide 68:

The paradigm shift from gathered to dispersed is about a change from focusing on meetings to releasing people to be Christians where they are: office, factory, school or shop.

Slide 69:

to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up Ephesians 4:11

Slide 70:

to prepare God's people for work in the services, so that the body of Christ may be built up Ephesians 4:11 NOT

Slide 73:

Teach a Sunday School class Lead the Sunday service Lead a home Bible study or small group Sing in the choir Be an usher or greeter Serve on a board or committee In the typical church, lay people are asked to serve in five or six capacities:

Slide 74:

Little wonder pastors lament that only 20% of their members are “active.” Could it be that the service opportunities are not broad enough to engage the energies and passions of people in the church?

Slide 75:

What if we settled for nothing less than 100% of our church members engaged at some level in meaningful ministry to the community?

Slide 76:

Isaiah 61:1-6 describes the reward of those who “rebuild…restore…(and) renew” the city.  It is the city who bestows on them their titles--“And you will be called priests of the Lord, you will be named ministers of our God” (Isaiah 61:6)

CONCLUSION :

CONCLUSION Francis of Assissi said it best when he said, “Preach the gospel at all time, if necessary use words.”

Isaiah 58 :

Isaiah 58 Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen, To loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yolk, to set the oppressed free And break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Slide 79:

Then you light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call and the Lord will answer; You will cry for help and He will say, here am I. If you do away with the yoke of oppression With the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your light will become like the noonday.

Slide 80:

The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.   Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up age old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings [Communities]

Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies…

Slide 87:

…it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

William Booth :

While women weep as they do, I’ll fight, while little children go hungry as they do now, I’ll fight, while men go to prison, in and out, I’ll fight, while there yet remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight; I’ll fight to the very end William Booth

You can Make A Difference :

You can Make A Difference

Where do we start? :

Where do we start? Ask what needs to be done – of God, the community and the church. Build foundations for the road ahead, theologically, relationally and pragmatically. Commence the work – step by step

We may know the problem, but are you living as part of the answer?

From the Pulpit to the Pavement. :

From the Pulpit to the Pavement. A thousand mile journey begins with the first step DO WE HAVE THE GUTS TO CHANGE?

Slide 93:

Do I love God above all else and let Him rule in my life in all things I do? What’s my vision for my nation? Do I want to build Kingdom values into the political, social, and economic structures and systems “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as in Heaven.” Do I use my freedom in Christ to serve others? Though a good reputation is good, character is what counts What vision fuel do I have for my church? Where do I want to take my church? Do I care and contribute to my community? Am I thinking ‘whole’ rather than ‘part’? Am I a team player? How do I handle conflicts & relationship issues? What am I inside? Do I love “truth in the inward parts”? My character is what matters to God.

Have you ever wondered why migrating geese fly in a V formation? :

Have you ever wondered why migrating geese fly in a V formation? As with most animal behavior, God had a good reason for including that in their instincts.

As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird following. :

As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird following. In a V formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% more flying range than if each bird flew alone.

Slide 101:

…and quickly gets back into formation. Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone…

Slide 102:

… people who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier than those who try to go it alone. Like geese…

Slide 103:

When a goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position. If people had as much sense as geese, they would realize that ultimately their success depends on working as a team, taking turns doing the hard tasks, and sharing leadership.

Slide 104:

Geese in the rear of the formation honk to encourage those up front to up their speed. It is important that our “honking from behind” be encouraging. Otherwise it’s just - well - honking.

Slide 105:

They stay with the unhealthy member of the flock until it is either able to fly again or dies. When a goose gets sick or wounded, two other geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and provide protection.

Slide 106:

Then they launch out again with another passing flock or try to catch up with their own. May we be so sacrificial, that we may be worthy of such friends in our time of need.

Slide 107:

…To learn from God’s marvelous creation; you only need to stop long enough to observe and let God reveal His wonders to you. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A SCIENTIST...
