Nursing Computer LabOrientation

Lab Overview : 

Lab Overview 24 computers in each lab plus one instructor computer Each computer has Word, Excel PowerPoint, Write-n-Cite, Pyxis, Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3.5, Real Player, QuickTime, Acrobat Reader, FreeMind SPSS is available only in room 390 Lab Hours 8:00AM – 10:00PM Mon – Thurs 8:00AM – 4:45PM Friday Closed Saturday and Sunday No Food or Drinks allowed in the labs Swipe card is required to enter the labs Student cards will be encoded Sept 1st from 8:00 – 9:00 in the atrium and again the next day from 8:00-9:00. If you miss both of these times give your student card to the front desk for encoding.

Claim ID : 

Claim ID You must have an INS login ID to be able to access any of the lab computers You can claim your INS and UMnetID from home at http://www.umanitoba.ca/claimid Or login to any open area computer with username: claimid and no password to access a computer and claim your id You will need your student number, date of birth and last name in order to complete the claim ID process If you forget your password or need help getting your ID contact the support office at Email support@umanitoba.ca Telephone support - (204) 474-8600 In-person – 123 Fletcher Argue

Email Addresses : 

Email Addresses Once you have claimed an ID you will have a U of M email address You can access your email from the U of M webmail page at http://www.umanitoba.ca/webmail You are required to communicate with your instructors using this email address If you would like to configure an email client to access this address instead of using the webmail interface instructions are available at http://umanitoba.ca/computing/ist/email/software/index.html I recommend that you use the instructions for IMAP email instead of POP

H Drive : 

H Drive Once you have claimed an ID you will also have 2GB storage space on the U of M servers This can be used to store data so it can be worked on in multiple locations and it is also backed up for you. You should still keep a copy on a USB drive for your own backup as well H drive is also accessible from home by going to http://ins.umanitoba.ca Do not store data in “My Documents” or on the desktop of lab systems. It will be deleted when you log out of the system

Printing in the Lab : 

Printing in the Lab Two laser printers 10¢/Page – even if you decide to double print Pay down at the reception desk – There is a $2.00 minimum The money should be added right away The money will be associated with your user name and will follow you to any computer in the Nursing computer labs Double click or hover over the dollar sign($) in the system tray to see your remaining balance

Printing in the Lab If your print job does not start check your balance If you do not have enough money on your account to complete the print job it will not start Duplexing is available on both printers There is no colour printer available in the Faculty of Nursing The Campus Copy Centre is your best option

Nursing Webpage The nursing website is at http://www.umanitoba.ca/nursing/ This page will have important news and events going on in the faculty Check it often There is also a student area of the site that give you access to information on bursaries and awards, the computer labs, job opportunities, orientation sessions and the nursing student council The computer labs page has information on Office 2007 if you are unfamiliar with the new interface

Skills Lab Videos : 

Skills Lab Videos The skills lab videos are available from the Faculty of Nursing site On the left hand side choose “Resources” The videos will open in Windows Media Player by default Windows Media Player, Real player and headsets are installed on the lab systems If you are having trouble watching the videos from home you can view them here in the lab or try the link provided on the resources page

JUMP and Angel : 

JUMP and Angel JUMP is a web portal for information about your courses and other campus services http://www.umanitoba.ca/jump Your syllabus and other course material will likely be available here You can also sign up for parking and emergency notifications through JUMP Some instructors are using Angel instead of JUMP and it can be accessed at http://www.umanitoba.ca/angel

Wireless Access at the U of M : 

Wireless Access at the U of M The Helen Glass building is equipped with wireless internet for those with laptops There are two SSID’s to choose from; uofm and uofm-wpa uofm is only intended as a way to get online long enough to get onto the secure connection Information on connecting to uofm-wpa is available at http://umanitoba.ca/computing/ist/access/wireless If you need help with wireless contact the support office at Email support@umanitoba.ca Telephone support - (204) 474-8600 In-person – 123 Fletcher Argue Wireless access is limited and you may not always be able to connect
