Living in global village, cross-cultural transactions and neo-liberal competitiveness have induced the growth of INVENTION & INNOVATION –led business, economy,society and governance. Barriers to Innovation : Barriers to Innovation Limited skills and training are a major bottleneck. Better information flows are needed More early-stage funding is needed Variations in productivity highlight the need for better knowledge diffusion Private enterprises need to increase R&D spending New domestic knowledge needs to be converted to commercial use The Diaspora needs to be tapped more effectively McKinsey studies show that only 10–25 percent of general college graduates in India are suitable for employment (Farrell, Kaka, and Sturze, 2005). Factors Led Innovation : Factors Led Innovation Business can survive by meeting needs of customers but grow by creating new desires Growing middle class population (which exceeds America’s total population) has inspired invention of Tata Nano ($2500). Searching for a better supply chain for agricultural produce has led invention of “e-Choupals” To grab a competitive market share Nokia & LG invented low cost mobile handsets. Increasing demand for knowledge has led corporate to adopt “Twin Strategy”: Manufacturing and R&D. Global Warming – Demand for Clean/Green Energy- Innovation of alternative energy sources. Tremendous growth in IT/BPO sector has created demands for “English Speaking” workforce: Led to develop a million dollar “English/Soft Skill Training Industry”. 4500-5000 Dabbawalas in Mumbai serve 200,000 lunches daily with one mistakes per 6 million. SEWA’s Trade Facilitation Centre researches markets, improves communications between micro enterprises and their federations, carries out capacity-building and product development, and develops information and training software in local languages. It has commercialized the rural handicrafts industry, which sells women’s goods through shops, trade fairs, and exports—in some cases adding $175 to an embroiderer’s annual income. Key results for the Trade Facilitation Centre include $307,000 in sales in 2006, a reduction in rejection rates from 30 percent to less than 9 percent, a state-of-the-art mainline production facility, and income generation for over 1,100 craftswomen in 2005 and 2006. The organization has pioneered the concept of “total village management” by providing sustainable income-generating opportunities and access to health care for the rural poor of Jharkhand, where 60 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. In the past 33 years, KGVK has helped increase incomes of more than 10,000 people, and created over 3,000 self-help (continued) groups in 352 villages of rural Jharkhand. Key results include the formation of 78 farmer clubs that provide training and extension services to over 600 farmers, and two retail shops that have had sales over $12,000.
