Bennett G, McNeill L, et al. Safe to walk? Neighborhood safety and physical activity among public housing residents. PLoS Medicine 2007; 4(10):e306 doi:10.1371/journal.pmed.0040306. A study of 1,180 predominantly racial and ethnic minority residents of Boston low-income housing projects found women who perceived their neighborhoods as safe walked more than women who perceived their neighborhoods as unsafe.
